The story takes place in Scotland, where plain Maggie Wylie's family, fearing she may become a spinster, finances young John Shand's studies in return for his agreement to marry her in five years. Recognizing his ambitions, Maggie helps to guide his career without his realizing it. He honors his commitment, even though he does not feel real love for her as she does for him. Behind every great man is a even greater woman. Helen Hayes is the good woman guiding ambitious politician Brian Aherne in the right direction in life. However Aherne isn't a man who knows how to love and she's older then him. Their relationship is built on respect. A fine movie where everyone puts on light Scottish accents, light enough for everyone to understand. Hayes was solid as a rock and Aherne put on comically good naive serious role. You just want to knock some sense into his head.
