Bette Davis is fantastic as the diabolically insane Baby Jane. But in order to accomodate her vast cruelty and treachery, the film makes the other characters into fools who either don't recognize what's going on or ignore simple solutions , as well as defying all logical sense of time (Davis' trips to town seem all take 3 to 5 minutes). Plus the whole film is drawn out WAY too long. See the less sadistic and vastly superior Sunset Blvd.

The character of Baby Jane was the inspiration for the career of Susan Tyrell. Having your child sing a gimmicky song about her dead dad is the forefather to funeral selfies.

Though Bette Davis gives one of the best performances I've seen in quite some time, the movie seems to lack any form of logic, with characters making the stupidest and most illogical decisions, and the movie drags on far too long. Still, the tension was high throughout almost the entire work, and Baby Jane should be remembered alongside the top villains of her time.

May be the most UNintentionally hilarious Hollywood star vehicle ever made. Over-the-top is an understatement as the 2 leads play ridiculous extremes:Crawford a long- suffering & laughably helpless martyr & Davis barn-storming through a role that'll sear itself into ur brain as the personification of diva bitterness.Although she's supposed 2 b the villain, her character's irritablity& indomitable refusal 2 admit she's lost it make u almost want 2 root 4 her instead of her whinily grating sister.

The 60s was arguably the golden age for horror films along with the 50s. What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? corroborates that with its evocative acting, tight plot and portentous ominousness. Bette Davis is malignantly and inimically great. A true horror classic.

A grotesquely photographed, cartoonishly devilish film featuring tour de force performances from Bette Davis and Joan Crawford and lots of thrills, scares, suspense and repulsion. The necessary comic reliefs are almost solely provided by the splendid duo of Victor Buono and Marjorie Bennett, thus resulting in a relatively balanced film despite some screenwriting inadequacies. It's not a flawless picture, but it's certainly memorable. And hauntingly so.

A horror film that terrifies because of how plausible it is. It's amazing that Crawford and Davis were convinced to play these characters. Crawford's helplessness and the great twist really make this film.

Really great piece of human wreckage and insanity. Both Davis and Crawford own their roles, one over the top as possible while the other is more subdued. It's so well filmed, too. The scenes with Edwin and Jane are disconcerting, as they are kind of kindred spirits in a way. He just hasn't fallen as far down the rabbit hole...yet.

A fantastic and classic thriller from the early beginnings of the horror genre! Bette Davis kills the role, and Joan Crawford keeps up fairly well, herself. Not to mention, the director stands out as a highlight, considering some amazing cinematography here. The reason this isn't a perfect film, has to do with its pacing and the fact that the beginning is a little boring. But honestly, I can get over it, because the movie as a whole, is fantastic.

The only reason I'm not giving it a perfect score is because some of the plot points are hard to swallow (really, Blanche, you could try the note thing AGAIN). But it hardly matters when the film is so much campy fun. Bette Davis is riveting and explosive and hilarious, I haven't laughed so much at a movie in quite a while. There's a wonderful mix of creepy psychological horror and wry black comedy, a clear influence on David Lynch. The lighting is fantastic as well, kind of New Wave Gothic.

There are so many things wrong with this movie, so I'll just harp on the fact that the victim is literally too stupid to live. It starts with the fact that she's a wheelchair bound woman, who has chosen to live on the second floor of a house with no elevator, but it doesn't end there. Basically, picture that scene in a bad horror movie where someone says: "Let's split up." Then imagine that scene being stretched for over two hours of idiotic decisions before ending with a nonsense plot twist.

Despite all the (justified) objections people have regarding the plausibility of individual plot points, story time vs. discourse time, pacing/editing etc., this is still a "must see" among female-centric movies. Bette Davis, an accomplished movie star, had the guts to entirely debase herself (the drag queen comparison is not a joke!), but I guess that was the only way to really nail this performance. OK, now I've gotta go and watch a Bruce Willis picture lest I catch the gay from this movie. ;)

WHTBJ is well worth checking out. Both Crawford and Davis are excellent as two elderly sisters. One wheelchair bound and dependant on the other sister who's completely crazy. It's hard not to focus on Davis as the loopy Baby Jane,as her performance is so over the top in contrast to Crawford's down trodden Blanche. I couldn't help but notice Edwin Flagg's mother's terrible Cockney accent, she should be standing proudly next to Dick Van Dyke for worst recorded on celluloid.

A great litl psychological torture movie. Perfect performances from both the leads guarantee a compelling watch. You really sit on the edge of your seat waiting for whats about to happen next. To think this movie was about to be shot in color, but ended up in black and white due to production involvement from Bette Davis. It works so much better in black and white, it becomes more dark, gritty...Kudos for her not to chose color.

Taut and effectively suspenseful, "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" may be heavily derivative of Hitchcock and classics such as "All About Eve" and especially "Sunset Blvd." but it skillfully incorporates these influences into a consistently engrossing narrative resulting in a minor classic. Davis is riveting in all of her over-the-top glory, Crawford is a relatable protagonist and Buono delivers a positively hilarious supporting turn.

Baby Jane is, in fleeting moments, one of the most terrifying horror antagonists put on screen. Unfortunately the rest of the film comes across as rather camp and silly, which undermines the creepy atmosphere and brief gothic moments. Blanche's Hitchcock-like predicament doesn't feel very fresh, doesn't really make me care. I felt there was much more to explore in the sisters' bond, which only comes across in the finale. Good performances but I think a different director could have done more.

Gorgeous black and white cinematography, a creepy soundtrack filled with flourishes of the harpsichord, and a batty performance by Bette Davis make this a classic suspense film of the 60s. Crawford is very endearing a really sells the anguish she goes through, but this is truly Bette's film, mostly due to design. Much has been said about how much the two actresses hated eachother and how Davis never gave Joan credit for this film, but she sells it. She's both horrific and sad and sympathetic.

I've heard this described as a darkly comic, campy bitch-fight, and a psychological horror about the dangers of celebrity. I would say that it's both. But, whatever your point of view, this is a well acted, superbly scripted movie event, which is not forgotten once seen. This is principally because of the two legends' performances. Crawford is marvellously understated, while Davis goes hell-for-leather. It truly is an experience, made all the better once you know that the hatred wasn't faked.

*SPOILERS* A bit old-fashioned, and the slow pacing dulled some of the thrills, but there were some undeniably delicious moments. The best was the final twist. I can't think of another film where the hero we've rooted for all film long turns out to be the villain! That's wonderful! It's definitely Hitchcockian, but he would have made this taut and timeless. Still worth a watch. Also, would Stephen King have created "Misery" without this? Not a chance! A day later I find myself mildly obsessed!

A fun little film about jealousy that goes all the way with the macabre. I wouldn't call it a a masterpiece, as there are too many moments when people should check their surrounding environment for eavesdroppers, and the twist ending is an unneeded plot element. 2. Superb, and maybe I liked it less than I would on a second watch. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are PHENOMENAL. Who ever thought that strong female leads existed in a pre-feminist dominated society? Joke aside, the electrical charge between the two actresses is palpable through the screen and the characters they portray are unforgettable. Victor Buono is magnetic too. My sole criticism would be the pacing which is very strange at different parts, although that adds to the crazy atmosphere.

Perhaps 1962 audiences were thrilled at the prospect of big stars hamming it up in a studio movie filmed in what was already an old-fashioned style but combined with the lurid sensationalistic subject matter of what would become soap opera television. Today it seems to appeal to audiences with a voyeuristic hankering for hysteria that makes no actual emotional demands – just like gossip. In any case, Davis is plain bad but most of the blame must lie with Aldrich's awful, overwrought direction.

How about yelling "help" out of the open window to her adoring fan? I just watched Sayonara with Marlon Brando the week before, which was made 5 years before this movie. formally, this has aged a bit worse than the other classics of 60s horror, the filming and sound design done very much in a studio system style, but Bette Davis's performance is pretty incredible, every bit as unsettling as Gloria Swanson in Sunset Blvd, though the screenplay of this is not quite as outstanding. worth the watch simply because Jane Hudson is such an iconic figure in feminine insanity.

What was special to this was the grisly black comedy of the approach and the closeness to real horror. It was not going to be a picture in which either sister won much audience sympathy. They were two grotesques, the opposite arrows in a classic sado-masochistic relationship. It's hard to miss, or forgive, the cruelty. Coming just a couple of years after Psycho, it moved black-comic horror into the mainstream and, even more than Sunset Blvd., it treated old Hollywood as a deranged waxworks show.

Bette Davis plays an amazing role, but some recurring moments approach laughability toward the end. Like the suspenseful intercut scenes of Jane running errands and Blanche trying to get help. She runs all over town completing all kinds of errands while apparently only 30 seconds have passed back at the house, every time. That, and I was constantly asking the screen "WHY DOES NOBODY CALL THE COPS?" but I guess you could yell that at most horror movies.
