I played a lot of Theme Park back in the day, and with that normally useless game-knowledge in the back of my head I wonder; how the hell does Westworld turn a profit?? Costs for transport, repair and personnel are in no way compensated by the 1000 dollars a day that its 15 visitors pay. IMMERSION RUINED. On top of that the pacing is horrid, the characters are bland and the decent premise is wasted on uninteresting filler. Brynner going all Terminator-y was cool though.

There's a very good film in here somewhere, but it gets lost amidst some dodgy pacing and bland stretches. The underlying concepts and the mighty Yul Brynner salvage it somewhat, however. It has occurred to me that I haven't read anything by Crichton. At least, I don't think I have. The films based on his books are generally pretty good, so perhaps I should. When Richard Benjamin grins, he reminds me of Rowan Atkinson. See this if you like theme park mismanagement films and proto-Terminators.

Despite being riddled with plot holes and science that makes little sense, it's a fun romp based on a clever premise. The movie is at its worst when it's indulging in corny Western clichés, most egregiously in the bar fight scene. But it gets pretty cool in the final act, and I loved the synthesized score. It's interesting as a precursor to Terminator, you can see a lot of the same elements and themes. I imagine it's only a matter of time before Hollywood remakes this, starring Will Smith.

The third act is dynamite, but it's slow-going getting there. Crichton, playing filmmaker for the first time, just isn't capable of pulling it off. The direction is especially off, as the movie takes its amazing concept and, impossibly, makes it boring with a wildly inconsistent tone and goofy "Old West" music. Brynner is a total badass here, playing The Gunslinger like an early model Terminator. Crichton would later perfect these ideas with Jurassic Park. Watch The Simpsons' spoof instead.

'Westworld' has a fun premise with a lot of potential, but too often it's squandered by lethargic pacing, underwhelming world-building, and an underdeveloped story. That being said, the score's effective, and Yul Brynner makes for an intimidating cowboy-Terminator.

The premise is interesting, but the execution is off. Either that or the film hasn't aged well. Would probably have been better served with someone other than Crichton at the helm. At least the violence seemed to be shot Peckinpah style. Not sure the other worlds were needed. Brynner is fine, but the leads could have been better. The comparisons to Jurassic Park are obvious, and the latter was much better served by a different director.

Simultaneously way ahead of its time and incredibly dated - this is one of the most 70s movies ever! Like many novelists who make the jump, Crichton doesn't quite get film pacing, leaving many scenes feeling extraneous. The Jurassic Park book is basically the same thing written better. That being said, the third act is excellent, and Crichton occasionally comes up with some brilliant imagery. Just needs the fat trimmed and the good content expanded on.

I'm no big fan of remakes, but Westworld always struck me as being a perfect candidate: it's a great idea imperfectly executed by an inexperienced director. In Crichton's defense he demonstrates some understanding of how to use space in the frame, but the film is sluggishly paced, tonally uneven and the acting is extremely variable. It also takes too long to build momentum. The final act is best with Brynner the bald wonder as a relentless killing machine in tense pursuit of Benjamin.

Despite his writing talent, Crichton had no understanding of the language of film. What should feel like escalation feels overlong, repetitive, and torpid. Critical turns in the story go almost unnoticed and comic relief scenes fall on their asses, exacerbated by an inert score and wildly inconsistent cinematography. The climax lacks any tension whatsoever. Ironically, for a story about the human need to feel in control, the film could've worked if Crichton had ceded the directing reins.

One day, I plan to make a Crichton-inspired theme park with areas based on books like Congo, Sphere, Timeline, Eaters of the Dead and The Great Train Robbery just to name a few. The trick to making it all work would be sparing some expenses. You see, that's what went wrong with Westworld and Jurassic Park.

An uneven but interesting classic sci-fi film. Michael Crichton's bad directing hurts the film, mostly in the form of awkward pacing. Yul Brynner has by far the best performance as the evil gunslinger robot, James Brolin is good in his role, and Richard Benjamin is passable, otherwise the ensemble cast isn't noteworthy. Overall it seems like there are around 20 minutes of a great film, and the rest is filler.

Michael Crichton is a much better writer than he is a director. Just check any of his attempts to verify that. This, the most famous with his name on it, is quite the quiche Lorraine. The character development is non-existent, and the rudimentary attempt at backstory is very rough around the edges. The few scenes where Yul Brynner is stalking and shooting people, and his demise (visually referenced in Terminator 2?) are the only highlights. Like a lot of 70s sci-fi, it really has not aged well.

Another example of a film very much a product of its time. Westworld definitely feels as if it has lost some of its magic through the years, not least of all because of comparisons with the currently on-going HBO TV series, which encapsulates the gist of the otherwise brilliant idea in a superb and contemporarily resounding way. It is no surprise to mention that the 1973 film is slow paced and has a lot of the distinct "seriousness" of the era, i.e. Rollerball type of roll-eye methods.

Oddly enough, the machines going wild is not explained during the movie and I thought it was pretty funny how the scientists died of suffocation within a matter of minutes :P. Veryyy weird ending (you dont find out if the only remaining goodguy makes it out and he's left with a very bizar look on his face :D). A seriously creepy thriller by sci-fi writer turned director Michael Crichton. It has little something that sets it apart from usual sci-fi movies of that era. 70's mustache riding Benjamin was a fitting lead, but Yul Brynner is a real star here. He and the soundtrack are the reasons why this film is so creepy. While it's not a great movie, it is thought provoking. And I'm pretty sure that it inspired Terminator directly.

Crichton gives his _Jurassic Park_ premise an initial run-through with this fun sci-fi thriller. Well done on an obviously tight budget, with Brynner great as a prototype of Schwarzenegger's Terminator character: an android who keeps coming back again and again every time it's "killed".

The robots at this futuristic amusement park may look completely human, but the logistics involved in maintaining them isn't going 2 score any points 4 verisimilitude. And while Brynner is a perfectly creepy predecessor 2 Cameron's Terminators, the story's Computers-Take-Over storyline feels as routine as the overly long set-up. Crichton does provide some necessary subtext in terms of dissolute (& dissolution of) humanity & parallels 2 slavery, but only the former really makes sense.

Crichton always had great story ideas, but the movie goes up and down with pacing issues (and too many problems in "the tenth quadrant"). You'd think if we spend time with a minor character he'd get more than just "I'm the sheriff now" scene. And the soundtrack was horrible. The last fifteen minutes help to save the movie from being a flop (and undeniably helped create the Terminator franchise).

Dull and ponderous rendering of a fine dystopic, existential premise gets bogged down in mind-numbing exposition discussing the elusive “virus” controlling the robot androids – imagine JURASSIC PARK but seen through the eyes of one of the engineers safely bunkered away. Brolin and Benjamin do their best with the flat, colourless characters handed to them, and Brynner’s sadly underused malevolent intensity is a comparative highlight, but overall a complete bore. The general conceit is interesting, and it offers a lot to kick around: an early conception of computer viruses, frail masculine power fantasies, the American infatuation with the West. It even functions as a precursor to The Terminator, and this may all have renewed significance in a time when VR is gaining traction. But the simple and unfortunate truth is that the execution - dialogue, performance, costuming and setting, effects and audiovisual design - is all rather silly.
