In a time when "The West" pretty much ends in Texas and only California is slowly being populated by the white men, there's a severe lack of women among the workers on Roy Whitman's farm in the California Valley. So he goes back east to Chicago to recruit wives for his employees. From the candidates he selects 150, who seem able to survive a months long journey across "The Great American Desert" and the Rocky Mountains. (imdb)

Very interesting, unusual woman-dominated western. Robert Taylor is the lead, but he is tasked with bringing 140 mail order brides 2000 miles out west. The nearly nonexistent music is effective and unusual for the genre and time period, and there are several individual excellent scenes. Nakamura's comic relief character is generally okay but sometimes annoying. Underseen and underappreciated.

I love this western. An alternative take on the frontier trail, taking 100 women across the rugged landscape to start a few life with the men that's already relocated west. And it's a trip filled with tragedy, humor and a bunch of tough ladies. Hope Emerson tougher than most! I wish they'd had twice the time to tell their story, for there's so much going on here. A wonderful travel westward that didn't get nominated for a single award despite being one of the highlights of the year.

This is a '50s western, and it starts with the typical depiction of women you would expect. As the story progresses, everything changes. Women become more self-sufficient and capable than then men. In this movie, it's the women that are heroic.

After a few gems, Wellman regresses to making a naive western like this, with a script by the schmaltzy Frank Capra. The script is contrived, Its depiction of women is, let's say, old fashioned, and perhaps annoying of all is the Japanese stereotype who accompanies the journey.
