Westfront 1918

G.W. Pabst's grimly prosaic WWI drama focuses on four soldiers who meet death on the battlefield. I suppose it should be commended for its non-glorification of war --it has all the momentum of being tied to a conveyor belt in a slaughterhouse-- but the fact that there is no dramatic conflict or interesting aspects to the characters makes it seem like rote fatalism.

G. W. Pabst's attempt at a war movie and it kind of ends up ranked in the middle of World War 1 movies of the time. Far from the worst attempts and far from the greatest WW1 stories. It reminds a lot of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), but without the personal drama. Pabst's main characters doesn't really break out and become more then random soldiers which is the main problem about getting behind this war classic. But a lot of the war scenes are good. Same with hospital scene at the end.

Second half was pretty good
