Crazy to think this was made by the director of Come and See. It's a children's film through and through, though thankfully it's at least conscious of its adult audience and layers hijinx with a bit of emotional gravitas and a hint of commentary on the Soviet regime. I enjoyed it and I can see why it could be special if you grew up with it, but it didn't do much for me.

So many fun gags and a lot of nice visual innovation. It's so nice and light you can hardly believe it came from the man who 20 years later gave us COME AND SEE.

When Klimov is behind the camera it's the only time I watch a movie in 4:3 and don't feel like parts of the film are missing on the right and left. He is a virtuoso of framing, and here it strikes me that framing in 4:3 is predicated upon different geometry than anamorphic widescreen. Instead of three vertical rectangles side by side, you're working with a psuedo-square, so that the ways by which you could use symmetry are exponentially expanded.

Delightful. Surprisingly well-shot for a children movie. But is the final scene a reference to Ivan's Childhood?

I mean... it's sweet, but the humor is a little... much.
