Mainly of a historical or nostalgic value. It catches a feeling of void and fantasies in 1980s/90s China, but doesn't seem to be sure how to think about them, maybe partly because that void hadn't succeeded in opening up a future before it got substituted by a feverish pursuit of money. Excessive use of voiceover and intertitles possibly shows some lack of cinematic skill of storytelling.
