Even better than Linklaters Sunrise/Sunset duo, "Weekend" is the most natural, insightful and endearing romance I've seen in a long while. Pairing two very different lovers without resorting to (gay) stereotypes, Haigh not only dissects how relationships move from non-confrontational attraction to a state of deeper connectivity, where questioning each other is sensual, not combative, but also pinpoints the heterosexual hegemonic control of the public space and media without pandering.

One of the most genuine films I have seen. Maybe I am just a romantic at heart and find stories of fleeting, yet potent love to be the most compelling, but this film really impressed me. The two leads were fantastic.

Not since "Lost in Translation" or "Before Sunset" have I seen a more honest portrayal of a brief encounter between two strangers. "Weekend" is a simple film; a breath of fresh air that is charming and quite personal. It's easily relatable -- not just for me or another gay viewer, but for anyone who's had to deal with a similar situation -- and it transcends sexual orientation to become a universal story of powerful human connection.

Lacked a bit more focus to deserve the 'Lost in Translation' / 'Before Sunset' parallel pointed out by many. Though uniquely tender and often intriguing especially the longer dialogues felt too random and unfinished to truly sink in.

An effective, brave film. I'm not bored by human behavior naturally arcing through dialogue. In fact, an understated drama is usually something I can sink my teeth into so long as that special balance is made between captivating filmmaking and interesting characters. Weekend nails this perfectly. It addresses many social issues under the rainbow and manages to be hopelessly romantic without ever sacrificing any realism.

Haigh depicts a familiar terrain, but with intensity and honesty. But what really impressed me was how the director built this relationship in visual aspects. Russell feels good when he can show love in private places, so the camera, loose but firm, always stays close; it's a documental look, but an intimate one. When he's in public, he becomes tight, and the camera prefers to leave him alone, watch him from some distance. That's why that final travelling was so awesomely cathartic.

Very important viewing. Shows just some of the insecurities and struggles of living as a queer person without being emotionally draining or too depressing. Some laughs here and there, but overall, just a super solid story with fantastic leads and deft, nuanced filmmaking from Andrew Haigh. It’s probably one of the best LGBTQIA+ movies I’ve seen honestly. Sweet, sad, tender and somber storytelling, with an honestly very satisfying ending. Cannot recommend it enough.

Very reminiscent of Before Sunrise (1995). That's not to say it's the same film but with a gay couple instead of a straight one, but they do have a similar feel. This one's less romantic (whether that's good or bad is subjective), and I didn't like the characters nearly as much, and I do believe Richard Linklater is a more skilled director, so yeah, to sum up, it's not as good. But it's decent in its own way. It has some genuinely sweet moments, and I did find it all very believabl

It may be trite to state this by now, but this is pretty much the gay "Before Sunrise" both in terms of central concept (it's mostly a short-term talk-and-sex session between two strangers) and quality (expert acting by Cullen and New and sharp characterizations). Haigh's low-key yet emotionally pungent film is effective both as a sweet, realistic love story and as an actually insightful and moving take on homosexuality. Kudos.

As is routine for gay films, it is to some extent being overrated by critics looking to make sure everyone knows how hip and non-homophobic they are, but its somewhat overfamiliar nature (see Before Sunrise, etc.) is overcome by strong filmmaking. There is an impressive vein of wistful melancholy that runs through the film without ever dipping into schmaltz, and the naturalistic acting is beyond reproach.

It seems I'm not the only that found this reminiscent of "Before Sunrise"... except less compelling. The writing is good, as are the leads--especially Tom Cullen. And most of the dialogue rings true. It's all so much better than pretty much any other gay movie I can think of, yet it lacks that certain something that makes it truly special. Worth a watch, though.

This is a beautifully detailed and specific film that, as is often the case when it's done right, creates something that feels very universal out of the accumulation of specific details. The film raises issues ... they argue about what queer identity means and New has brief conflicts with straight men ... but the film isn't really about these issues.

Weekend estreava há 10 anos no South by Southwest Film Festival. BlurayRip RARBG.

Similar to Before Sunrise but a bit more explicit and less romantic. At least nobody dies in the end. Fav scene: pretending to come out to his dad.

A contemporary romantic drama centered around two gay people. The story evolves naturally, it feels genuine and intimate with the main characters getting really personal in just a couple of days. They talk about their experience being gay, how they feel out public and wanting to be something more than you truly are. The chemistry is important for the movie to work and the actors does it wonderfully. The writing is insightful, mature and beautiful in its simplicity.

I'm not really in any position to say which films capture an "authentic" gay experience better than others, so it's purely on aesthetic grounds and a reflection of subjective cinematic preference that i'd say i prefer Sebastein Lifshitz's Come Undone or Julián Hernández's Broken Sky or even some of Gregg Araki's work to this. But that said, this is still pretty great for what it is, a fresh approach to an albeit very familiar premise with very strong dialogue and performances.

[Re-watched] When I saw it for the first time I was very impressed by realism and lack of romantic movies cliches. I liked it enough to watch it again, but this time it failed to resonate with me as much as it did the first time. I still think it's fresh romantic movie, it being gay-themed didn't bother me at all, it actually added something to it.

It's simply the best romantic film of the year, eschewing cliches and sentimentality to paint a very realistic and honest gay relationship amid the woeful persistence of societal constraints and discrimination.

As far as gay romances go, this is second only to Brokeback Mtn, and just by a bit. It's more realistic, and features the better sex scene.

I found this film not to my tastes. I can see the appeal of an intimate portrait of a brief affair and capturing the moments of discovering things about a new lover. But for me, the characters had no background and not much appeal, they seemed like two randoms who would make better strangers than friends. I could not get inside the gay mindset and found the sex off-putting, although their conversations had occasional moments of touching sensitivity. Too one-note and direct for me.

Romance built upon deep revelations and discussions on beliefs, a refreshing change from the support and commitment combo in most. Really well shot and acted. Lost in Translation-y but they do it.

An absolutely crucial watch, Weekend is one of the best and most powerful love stories I've seen (if one can call it such). Generally taking a quiet, detached and low-key approach, our two lead performers are sublime, delivering the wonderfully-realised screenplay effortlessly. A gem.

The most affecting love story I've seen in ages, mostly because it's a character study about two characters studying each other's characters, while having sex and talking, and how that challenges them and leads to something like love.

Feels like Before Sunset / Before Sunrise, except not as interesting. The reason why those movies worked was because it felt natural, but still retained the snappiness of a script. This felt unscripted and natural, which is boring for the most part. Another reason those other movies were better is because they took place within a shorter period of time, so you can get into it more. When it's over the course of a weekend, there are many breaks in the flow which kind of ruins it.

It is realistic and I applaud any decent movie effort pertaining to gay relationships, but in retrospect what you watch is ultimately a "lesson" that these two characters learned. A lesson of how a casual fling can tug on your heart...While there is nothing wrong with that I always look for a message of some value. The intimacy was filmed well and tasteful, but the drug use was a bit out of my taste. While its easy to connect with the characters, nothing really of any substance was accomplished
