With now Toshirô Mifune risen to stardom in Akira Kurosawa pictures, the studio decides to put him in more traditional women's pictures for other directors, here starring alongside 10-year-older and well-established Kinuyo Tanaka for a soapy romance with married woman. Mifune gets to undress several times and comes across Gregory Peck-style handsome. I'm sure that was a success towards its targeted audience, but this is not necessary the type of roles I crave to see Mifune in.
