In post-war London an aimless young married bisexual man, Johnny, is sent to prison. He is forced to entrust his beloved Alsatian dog, Evie, to the reluctant care of his down-trodden parents and older, middle-class ex-lover and best friend, Frank. After a series of visits to Johnny's parents' home, Frank bonds with the dog whose mischievous spirit reminds him of his incarcerated friend.

Whilst watching this film, I can't say that I liked it. The film appears repetitive and the writing quite poor. After watching the film and reading other reviews, especially Roger Ebert's, I came to see it in a different context. One where the theme of the film wasn't caring for a dog, but instead one where lies, and the refusal to acknowledge the truth (Frank and Johnny's sexualities, the welfare of the dog and the children, Frank being strung along for money) prevent solutions to any problem.

This feels like it could have been a great film, but is really just a good one. Bates is superb, but he's stranded in one place in the middle act, obsessing about the dog with no plot movement. It's an adaptation of a novel, and it feels like we are losing Bates' inner monologue and getting very little to replace it. Oldman is great, but he disappears for much of the film.
