We Are What We Are

2013
Drama, Suspense/Thriller

A seemingly wholesome family, the Parkers have always kept to themselves, and for good reason. Behind closed doors, patriarch Frank rules the roost with a rigorous fervor, determined to keep his ancestral customs intact. As a rainstorm develops, tragedy strikes and his daughters Iris and Rose are forced to assume responsibilities that extend beyond those of a typical family. The most important task is putting meat on the table-- but not the kind that can be found at the local supermarket. (Sundance)

This was a big disappointment. Slow, boring, even tedious with questionable acting and an annoying soundtrack. 5 minutes in and I knew what the story was about and then I was forced to slog through 90 minutes of near nothingness before the mediocre and unsatisfying ending.

So boring I guess you might say it outright cannibalized my attention.

I turned it off when I realised I'd been watching for 15 minutes without most of the time being able to hear the words being mumbled and those words I did hear I forgot so quickly it bored me to tears

Went in with no expectations, kinda loved it! Twisted enough for my tastes, but doesn't need to feast (ahah) on the violence too much to tell an effective story. I liked that there was a bit of detective work and thriller stuff involved with the horror. You can sympathize a bit with some of the most horrible characters (up to a point) because they are fleshed out just enough. All the actors, expecially for the main family, are so great here.

Some gross scenes and predictable script, but acting is great.

This film deserves some credit for at least trying to mix up indie drama elements with a more conventional horror story. Unfortunately it falls flat when the serious tone collides head-on with the rather absurd plot and a grotesque finale.

It's not great, but it's very competently shot and can be outright pretty at times. The story is decently intriguing and the buildup to the fallout is paced rather well.

This movie is amazing. Amazing acting performances all around, and some truly intense scenes make this a creepy, memorable , and very twisted experience.

You're all wrong, wrong, wrong that film is not bad for really that movie was ok, it was screenwrier (along first half) and that little "actor" that made it bad.

I'm glad I hadn't seen the trailer or read anything about this before going in, as it maintains a nice air of mystery throughout. The first half encouraged much speculation from me, which would have been destroyed had I known the secret. While the eventual payoff wasn't mind blowing, it was certainly entertaining.

The attempt to conjure tense but low-key horror is not very successful, with mediocre dialogue and performances, the result being that when the dramatic climax arrives the contrast with what came before fails to heighten the impact and is very hard to buy into.

Dobrze zrealizowane pod wzgledem technicznym, ale - cholerka - momentami nudne jak diabli. Mozna, ale nie trzeba.

ambitious, the cast is good, technically nothing wrong here. yet it lacks salt and falls short in terms of real depth. the viewer's supposed to relate to cannibal kids, who suddenly, after years of malpractice, decide that killing and eating people is kinda bad. but not for a semi-artistic finale, topped off by the typical no-brainer ending. for an at least "unusual" topic, it boils down to pretty much cuisine-routine.

Terrible terrible ending to what would have otherwise been a pretty good movie

It's fairly predictable and slow-moving... Which is FINE, if the focus of the movie is more on character development, and the way these people grow and change (or don't change). But the movie just sort of flirts with these concepts, and I didn't feel that it ever really fully committed to the idea of a heavily character-driven story. It has those elements, but I don't think they lived up to their full potential.

Great horror movie with a good setup. Surprisingly tense and gruesome in spots. Check it out.
