This film will make you very sad that in the age of special effects and computer generated armies, Waterloo is truly a thing of the past. 15,000 real infantry and 2,000 real cavalry were employed for the battle scenes. Truly epic, and highly recommended for anyone who loves Napoleon.

the redeeming factors of this movie are obviously the production values and a somewhat memorable performance by rob steiger. most is, however, lost in the clumsy directing and dodgy camera work. truth is, movies like the ring trilogy and braveheart do this thing a hundred times better.

Bondarchuk follows his WAR AND PEACE formula, and the scale of the battle scenes is, once again, truly phenomenal, but the feeble attempt at a romantic subplot goes absolutely nowhere (perhaps it makes more sense in some longer version lying about somewhere), Steiger hams it up far too much as Napoleon, Plummer continuously acts as if he is attending a delightful summer garden party, and elements of Rota’s score are suspiciously similar to Leonard Bernstein’s “There’s a Place for Us”.

This is a good, underrated big budget war movie that probably deserves some more attention, but there are flaws that keep it from being great. The long dance scene in the middle that introduces a (pointless) romance that is barely covered again is the worst of them, but there's some tonal issues too, like a weird comic relief theme with a pig that feels out of place. The inner thoughts are also unnecessary and could have been regular dialogue. Good film, though. Large scale battle is great.

The battle scenes are remarkable and are to be appreciated far over what some geek cunt creates in his computer.

This looks like Welles' attempt at a lasting epic. Unfortunately it falls well short of the mark. Lavish sets, plush and impressive costumes and cinematography give this a rich feel supported by a strong cast. However, characterisation is weak, some casting is doubtful (for me Napoleon is one dimensional) and a good editor would improve things. - Overall when it comes to Waterloo Abba do it better.

It saddens me that this era of film has been lost to CGI and special effects. The sheer number of extras makes up for silly looking rear projection on cavalrymen actors. This film is carried on its spectacle, but what spectacle...

Specialist interest. The photography and composition is painterly and gorgeous, but I found the film itself to be of very little interest. // Rod Steiger reminded me so much of Anthony Hopkins - similar voice, speaking style, mouth movements, and gestures.

Rod Steiger as Napoleon and Christopher Plummer as Wellington means that this is about as good a Napoleonic Wars film as we're ever going to get
