It reminded me of Peter Jackson's Hobbit movies - I'm watching astonishing images on screen, it's deftly directed, but I'm sitting there bored wondering why I just can't connect with it. They spent a fortune on every part of this movie, making it the best it could be, all except for the script. The result is an unimaginably fantastic looking film full of cliche and mawkish sentimentalism and simplistic morale argument - very much a step down from the previous two stories.

The primary criticisms I expect to hear are: the ending veers into the melodramatic, and, the humans are consistently portrayed as irredeemably evil, except for Nova. I think both criticisms are fair. And I don't care about either of them. Not in the face of EVERYTHING ELSE that this movie not only does right, but does phenomenally. Nearly every element comes together, complimenting each other, and helping to ceremoniously cap one of the most complete and investment-worthy trilogies of my era.

A truly lovely experience. Not just this movie but the trilogy as a whole. Relatable villains, probably the best/most realistic CGI of all time, and summer blockbusters that weren't afraid to explore some impressive emotional depth. Andy Serkis puts out a tremendous performance, as do all the actors who play apes. The emotion that they are capable of expressing is nothing short of amazing. Despite it's dark tones manages to have some much needed lighter moments with Steve Zahn and a fun escape.

The Great Escape: Apes style. Slower and more introspective than expected. Caesar was the standout; lifelike and completely believable, created by layering photoreal CGI onto the motion captured performance of Andy Serkis. The main story was Caesar and his trusted Ape allies journeying but a surprising amount of time was set in a POW camp. Newcomer Bad Ape was great and brought some welcome levity. 'War' doesn't quite match the best parts of 'Dawn' but was more consistently engaging throughout

In all honesty, this was an excellent end to the trilogy. The war aspects and the story are very dark and brooding. Serkis is excellent as always and his character is developed really well. The writing is really good and the directing and score are also done extremely well. I'll even say the CGI was improved upon and very realistic. Matt Reeves has definitely improved as a filmmaker. Probably my favorite in the series, and a well done movie overall. If you like this franchise you'll love this.

Does a little more to distance itself from the originals, and the Burton remake, but what sets this new series apart is a dedication to character development as well as world building and awesome special effects. I'd like to see exactly where it can go from here, because humans are friggin' dropping like flies.

RISE is about the hubris of technology. DAWN is about the unsociability that makes peace so difficult to attain. This is a descent into the heart of the darkness that comes with abandoning peace and embracing destruction. Harrelson is a weak Colonel Kurtz, however, and the central conflict is neither complex enough nor crazed enough to succeed as an ode to war. The film looks great, but ultimately pulls its punches, becoming a far too generic tale of escape and sacrifice: a missed opportunity.

By the end I was quite irritated by the unduly long melodramatic scenes with a camera that lingers far too long, the repeated use of unnecessarily long silences, and relentless heavy handed story telling. Technically it is good with only a few substandard animations. Good music. Overall, it was entertaining and had a few good action scenes, but the dialog, pace, story, direction and editing frequently make it tedious.

Apparently critics don't mind a total loss of subtlety in what had been a thoughtful franchise. It's all heavy-handed metaphors for slavery, ethnic cleansing,& Christ in this installment's 1-sided war of Good vs Evil. There's no longer any relative decency to be found in the human camp. Instead of confusion, misunderstandings & the hate & fear of some individuals leading to conflict, we get 1 group that's all good & 1 that's all bad. Individuals may switch sides, but only 1 side's understandable

A bit of a disappointment after Dawn. The CGI looks great, but the story is standard, predictable and not very engaging. The characters too one-dimensional and the pace grating. The opening scene is easily the best scene in the film. The addition of the character Nova felt really tacked on. Overall a lot of plot elements either didn't make sense or were undeveloped. The weak script makes the film not very believable. Themes could have been explored much better, there was a lot more potential.

Far and way the best of the new Ape movies to date is also unexpectedly more somber, and takes the form of an old school adventure/war movie, echoing GUNS OF NAVARONE, THE GREAT ESCAPE and (explicitly) APOCALYPSE NOW. Wisely focuses almost entirely on its Ape characters, who are invested with much deeper emotional complexity, giving their stories genuine resonance -- though Harrelson dominates every scene he is in as the Kurtz-like captor. A grand, elegiac end to this chapter.

Writes bigger cheques than it can cash with all the political allegory and Apocalypse Now nods; too melodramatic, too dependent on clichés, and its heroes far too... well, human, to actually play as anything beyond yet another retread of the Rightous Uprising Against Evil Dictators. Why make your heroes apes if you're just going to have them behave like people? That said, it looks good, and does what it does very well. I just wish it had had more guts.

I quite liked the turn the movie took, something well hidden from the trailer. Exploring even deeper what it means to be a human; the desire to survive, to be alive; the loyalty to your kind and the lack of such due to the previously mentioned... Really great topics neatly wrapped with superb CGI. Definitely more thought provoking that the other two movies.

I feel a little out of sync with the rest of the world here in that this is probably my third favorite of this trilogy - but that isn't to say I didn't like it! It's a really unusual summer blockbuster with its mournful tone and lack of traditional action scenes for huge stretches of its runtime; an ambitious attempt at doing full-blown character drama where said characters just happen to be CGI. That may be why I admired this film's ideas and ambitions more than I really "enjoyed" it though.

"Trite" is the best term for this film. It's Schindler's List, it's Passion of the Christ, it's Apocalypse Now, it's Roots, it's absolutely nothing interesting. Throw in Phantom Menace as it's got a goddamn Jar Jar in it as well. The first two films had great action scenes and interesting developments to rest on. This had nothing. Why watch two and a half hours of apes fighting against social injustice when you can watch better movies with actual people doing that?

I've always enjoyed the PotA movies as a potent metaphor for the issues and inherent tensions that plague our society to this day. With WAR, those conflicts and their outcome are brought to a thrilling, entertaining and thoroughly affecting end. As the future of both races hang in the balance, the stakes have finally been properly raised, and the actors sell every emotion and line of dialogue flawlessly through one of best uses of close-ups I've seen in recent years. A bloody good time, ya know.

* For a movie that has war in the title.. Well there isn't much of it, at least the way you would want it to. The first act is definitely amazing. Film has a great start and first half hour but after that it just drags with a mediocre storyline that's just unsatisfying. The characters and the apes are good yes, but it just doesn't live up to the greatness of the series. Tad disappointed but maybe my expectations were too high..

A slight step down from Dawn but still awesome. Serkis was incredible as Caesar yet again, the action sequences worked well, and there was a lot of intelligence and emotional depth. The POW camp was harrowing but if I had to level a criticism, albeit a tiny one, it's that maybe it took a bit of a dip during that period, which maybe prevents it from being a 95. Excellent direction/cinematography elevated it to a higher level. This trilogy is awesome.

Matt Reeves is a genius on par with Villeneuve and Fincher. It just so happens his forte is summer tent poles. One of the fascinating aspects of this movie is how fucked up it is, with parallels to the Holocaust, forced labor camps and POW camps. Harrelson is a fantastic villain. Serkis and company are perfect and powerful. But Reeves deserves the praise - excellent staging and cinematography, all while using the most complicated mo-cap in history of cinema - the results are amazing!

after a marvellously tense and expressive first act, it fails to live up to the wounded wisdom and complexity of DAWN (which in fairness also peaked in its first act... humans ruin everything), instead declining into an episode of THE WALKING DEAD that thinks it's APOCALYPSE NOW and a slavery/holocaust movie and a PoW movie and caesar is christ and don't worry it's not gonna let you miss any of these clever and important associations.

WFTPOTA is a satisfying conclusion to what has been an incredibly impressive trilogy. Personally I think Rise & War are very good bookends to what is a superior middle chapter and for me Dawn remains the pinnacle of this franchise. But take nothing away from this fitting finale. Woody Harrelson is a worthy character addition and Andy Serkis is simply wonderful and staggering once again. The harsh and brooding tone of this finale makes for an incredibly engaging, raw and heartfelt experience.

A worthy conclusion to a great trilogy. It has to be said, the CGI acting in this is incredible. Serkis' Caesar has always been Oscar worthy stuff but this is arguably the best he's been, and newcomer Zahn as 'Bad Ape' is equally impressive in a supporting role. 'War' was far more intimate an experience than I was expecting and for the most part this works well. Personally, I disliked the very end as having got to that point, the choice of conclusion seemed unnecessarily forced.

War is interestingly enough, not the war most would think when going into this, War sets itself apart from the others in the trilogy. War isn't a high scale, typical action movie some may thought, instead the war is displayed from internal struggle, and captures the cruelty of the relationship between apes and humans. The final send off for Caesar is done extremely well, thanks to Serkis and Reeves excution for the character, and the apes as a whole. Amazing close to the trilogy.

It is much, much better than the second movie. Honestly, the direction of human/ape conflict is not my cup of tea for the Planet of the Apes and I would have gone to another direction; however the actual war sequences are exquisite. I think the important thing to rate here is the closing chapter in the trilogy, and not the stand alone film. "War" does the whole series complete justice, and creates a seemless entry to "Planet of the Apes", albeit via a somewhat convoluted and over complex story. The virus, the humans battling against each other, seemed a little far fetched. After all, humanity WAS fighting an existential battle with the apes. But if you buy into the franchise, "war" doesn't let you down for a second. superb

It's a smart, entertaining, and thrilling film that intimately details the internal struggles of its main character, as well as those of the people and apes surrounding him. So Dawn is the better overall film, but this has the best over the top ridiculous scene (beating Dawn's dual machine gun wielding bonobo riding a horse jumping over fire), I'm talking of course about Woody Harrelson simultaneously doing Amon Goeth & Colonel Kurtz impressions while standing above apes being beaten up in a concentration camp as the US national anthem plays. War is a satisfying end to the Apes trilogy, as well as a great film in its own right. The primary focus is on the apes with the humans merely playing an ancillary role, a progression that has shifted masterfully through Rise & Dawn. The first half takes an introspective tone that is more human than most blockbusters while the second half adds in more comedy; Serkis & Zahn are perfect in their respective roles. My first Apes film, and it bored the shit out of me. Dull, dry, and generic, the only interesting and fresh aspect about this film is that it's able to tell your usual blockbuster story, but with mostly apes speaking in sign-language (and the stunningly good visual effects make this work). At least there's some explosions and spectacle at the end to wake me up, but most of this film is a moralist chore that says nothing new, and I don't appreciate Harrelson's Kurtz impression.

This is one plodding film. The spectacular special effects and CGI are squandered through poor pacing. Even on the final scene I found myself thinking "Come on, wrap it up already - we get it!".

Very intense. I expected an action movie, but it is far from that. Don't be fooled by the name: "war" is raging, but the movie is about slavery and resistance. As the other two movies, Apes are superb. State of the art CGI. I must admit that it is a bit long and some times really slow (that is unusual for a "war" movie. It is more "Thin Red Line" than "Saving Private Ryan"). Not a 90 because sometimes you NEED the "Rohirrim charge" effect to be epic. Beautiful anyway, well done.

Despite the (very) misleading title it's exactly as good as you would expect from this saga.

Metal Gear Solid: Ape Invasion. The "War" is the first scene, the tie-ins to the source material are skull crushingly bad, and I still don't understand why I'm supposed to be cheering for Apes instead of humans. The cinematography and effects are amazing though.

W3E1P1S1V2M1A1R1. Basically just a showcase for the incredible special effects. 50% of the movie is extreme close-ups on ape faces being super expressive and detailed and lifelike. The rest is a pretty paint by numbers action movie, complete with implausible and convenient coincidences, oversimplified emotions, etc.

Quite quiet and contemplative for a large summer blockbuster. Spectacularly directed and Serkis playing a CGI ape is one of my fav performances of the year. Everything just works so well together. Bad Ape was great. Also, if you can watch this you can probably watch foreign films since so much of this was reading subs.

The movie is so well-made that it makes the rather far-fetched idea of apes against humans quite believable and acceptable. Watching the previous two instalments is certainly helpful to under a couple of plot-lines. The movie is high on the emotional quotient in a good way. For a moment, you hate your own kind (i.e. humans). Caesar's (the ape-leader) performance is top-notch. By the way, the poster is misleading. That scene never happens!

Unexpectedly good, with actually more drama than action--and the climactic battle is one of the best. Superb visual detail and an innovative script.

The (not so) Great (or entertaining) Escape. Trilogy finished, I only liked the first one.

Trailers and posters are somewhat misleading. Woody, for whatever reason, insists on wearing his shades at night. Nothing seems to make up for the loss of Koba. Yet, the trilogy ends, the only way it could have ended. Feeling a little cheated, I'm left wanting for more.

WFTPOTA is another spectacle. Caesar's character is still very interesting, and Serkis delivers yet again. Still, there are a number of oversights that take away from the realism of the story (impossible horse to ape weight ratios, Caesar understanding sign language without actually seeing it, continued inconsistencies with ape intelligence scaling, etc.) Hateful bigots committing racially motivated atrocities under the guise of Christian Nationalism however, is as real as it gets these days.

I’ll preface this by saying I watched all the Planet of the Apes. The movies are honestly so enjoyable to watch. Seeing the ape’s body language is very intriguing to interpret and I feel adds to the viewers experience and retention of character dynamics. Unfortunately, I felt as though the prior movies shined through their explorations of world building and small ape politics. This movie felt as though concentrated too heavily on human military conflict as opposed to something more ape focused

R - Just a classic war film really. Deliberate echoes of The Bridge On The River Kwai, The Great Escape, Apocalypse Now, and many more.

A great wrap up to the trilogy. Character writing is done very well for the monkeys and the humans as well. The shift of focus back to development from action helps this film and the amazing cgi as well.

Why do I keep watching these movies if I don't enjoy them? Joke's on me and my free time. It wasn't bad, just… mostly uneventful, and extremely silly and heavy handed the rest of the time. A gorilla kapo or an ape underground railroad weren't on the list of things I thought I'd see today.

It's surprisingly slow and contemplative with much less war than the title would suggest. The story stalls the most during the apes internment as few other than Ceaser have the gravitase needed to anchor sequences. The world building is incredible detailed and robust

Lands hard on the first act with very strong hooks and developing on a lot of what previous movies established. It's really cool to see how differently intelligence goes across the apes but also not refraining from portraying the negatives of their dynamic. I feel the movie gets weaker when it gets to the prison break section but I do think it does a decent job of contextualizing the human's conflict with the apes providing much more character to them than in previous films.
