Waltz of the Toreadors

A lecherous retiring general (Peter Sellers) finds himself on the cusp of running away with his long-term mistress (Dany Robin), but they find themselves frustrated at every turn--often by themselves. What begins as a romantic farce turns rather melancholy towards the end; some very funny moments and a good performance by Sellers don't totally compensate for the rather unlikable characters and some hard-to-swallow turns of plot. Handsome production values; oddly haunting quality helps a bit.
