America loves Cox! But behind the singer/songwriter's music is the up-and-down-and-up-again story of a musician whose songs would change a nation. On his rock-and-roll spiral, Cox sleeps with 411 women, marries three times, has 22 kids and 14 stepkids, stars in his own '70s TV show, collects friends ranging from Elvis to the Beatles to a chimp, and gets addicted to--and then kicks--every drug known to humankind...but despite it all, Cox grows into a national icon. Heir apparent to Spinal Tap. Musical production goes the extra mile, the songwriting is pin-point accurate to every style from Roy Orbison to Bob Dylan and Reilly is game to match (that's actually him singing!) I totally buy into the canon of Dewey Cox. The rest of the movie is rife with hit-or-miss silliness but the surprisingly moving final scene excuses any lame puns or cheap gags that came before.

Very funny when it's not trying too hard to match Walk the Line in parody. The songs are great and Reilly deserves a lot of credit for being able to embody the song styles of Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Roy Orbison and pull it off completely. Not enough people have seen this.

Succeeds for exactly three reasons: First, biopics are so cliched and monotonous that it's super easy to successfully spoof them. Second, it hits and maintains the perfect level of absurdity that you even start to buy it. And third, of course, is Reilly's performance, particularly when singing. A bit of a hidden comedic gem. Also contains the most accurate film depiction of what happens after you smoke weed for the first time.

A wry, amusing romp that manages to be both remarkably clever and remarkably stupid in a very clever way. Odd as it sounds, John C. Reilly made me care more about Dewey Cox than most other biopics about actual people. I also can't stress enough how good the songs are; shockingly so, even. The Indulgent Director's Cut that I saw runs too long, but I think that's the joke, which makes it being the now default version disappointing. Score adjusted appropriately. Recommended.

I love John C. Reily and anyone who is or was at one time a student of comedy will laugh every time they purposely break one of the rules in this movie. Decent satire, the music was pretty great, the freaking Beatles were awesome, and I loved Jenna Fischer she really looked like she was having fun. I could watch Reily rip sinks out of the wall for a long time and still keep laughing. Got a slightly mediocre score from me due to a lot of flatline jokes. Still great fun though.

Baby Boomer nostalgia had it coming. A nice little fuck you to the generation that deserves it. Apart from that, it's funny as shit. Love the drug scenes especially, and the songs are pretty much amazing. It does go the low road with toilet humor a little often, despite being much smarter than that. Fuck it, 8/10.

While I think it's decently funny in parts as a satirical bio-pic I'd be lying if I said it had lots of big laughs. I normally enjoy satire and I normally enjoy stupid laughs but this just didn't do it for me. It does have it's moments, such as Cox always coming up with songs at inappropriate moments and The Beatles were great, but a lot of the jokes simply didn't work for me. Maybe because I haven't seen all the films it's satirizing. It's alright but not great.

John C. Reilly is, and always will be, awesome. He sells this movie 100%. The movie is half ridiculous and outlandish comedy, half a fairly clever satire of musical biopics. Similarly, it's kind of half funny and half not. I won't lie, it's hit or miss, and there are plenty of misses. But oh the hits, those glorious hits. Apatow movies always get to seem the biggest laughs out of me, and this is no exception. Certain scenes of this are just goddamn hilarious, I was dying of laughter.

I'm not sure that this could stand on its own as a great comedy, but as a parody of Walk The Line and Ray it's spot on. It's got its flaws in that there are too many dead moments and it's longer than it needs to be. It makes up for it though by consistently delivering laughs and a strong performance from Reilly.

amazing cast, incredible soundtrack, funny as fuck. calling it just a parody is a travesty. it's a satire of the music business and particularly of the music biopic genre, which basically consists in repeating the same movie each time with a different singer. I dare you to watch any other biopic and not laugh thinking of this one. and those songs, my god, those songs. masterfully curated to fit each era and period. tremendous execution. one of my all time favorite movies, and I'm not even joking

I was giggling throughout the first half, but the second unfortunately loses some steam. Still, it's a great biopic parody and even has its heart in the right place. Reilly is absolutely wonderful, assisted by an impressively large amount of fun comedian cameos. The music is spot-on as well.

After a few years of surreal comedy being limited to the awful "____ Movie" series, it gets a major revival in this hilarious spoof of Walk the Line and Ray. The actors refuse to phone it in or play down to the material, the laughs come hard and fast, the hilarious cameos rock, the songs are catchy, and Jenna Fischer wears a transparent negligee. Awesome!

I was too hard on this movie the first time I saw it. I think some dumbass 15 year old in the theater ruined it for me by laughing at literally everything. It's a solid parody. I love all the music references. Kudos for the Stevie Wonder losing his sense of smell reference.

Walk Hard was very funny, but it was bordering on two kinds of comedy, and had it picked one, the whole film would have benefited. On one side, there is the absurd, surrealist comedy of an all out spoof resembling Airplane!. At other times, it resembles a dryer, more clever kind of comedy, as if it was not so much a spoof, but an actual, original semi-serious comedy. The duality makes the pacing quite awful. Despite its flaws, it is still one of the best acted comedies recently. Meh!

Apatow's "Music Movie" is uneven, but still obliterates anything from Friedberg and Seltzer. Reilly's performance powers the film through its occasional lulls, and it's amazing how many artists he can perfectly impersonate while still keeping a firm grasp on Dewey Cox as a character. The movie itself suffers from pacing issues, and even at a two-hour running time it still feels like a lot was cut out. When it hits though, it hits hard, and the script has a good mix of wit and dumb humour. Solid.

Funny damn movie! I just want to say this much: there a 2 things that make this really really great. First is Tim Meadows and his performance as the drummer. "You never paid for drugs... not once!" And the other, and funniest part of the entire movie, is the scene with The Beatles. Schwarzmenn and Rudd are particularly great during this part. Not for everyone, though.

This is not great, but it touched on a few biopic cliches that I didn't even know existed. And it touched on every single one that was already staring me in the face. I laughed, but mostly during the first half of the film. I don't know, though. The more I think about it, the more lazy the film feels. I don't think that anybody was trying to make a great movie. Pretty much every aspect of it feels like a throwaway.

'Walk Hard' makes for one head-scratching trip. When this 'Ray/Walk the Line/Music Industry' spoof hits the right notes, it hits hard, and lots of laughter ensues. But a lot of the time when it's not working, it felt as though I was watching deleted scenes from an upcoming "Scary Movie 5." The music here, though, deserves a serious Oscar nomination- it's inventive and actually fun.

The soundtrack is catchy and entertaining, with some really funny lyrics, but the film doesn't match up. The story of Dewey Cox is a fine parody of musical biopics, but the humor is all over the place and the editing and pacing of the film are horrendous. Most of the film is edited so that the characters come in, do the joke, and then we're out of the scene and on to the next. The movie is definition of hit-or-miss comedy.

The worst kind of film. Comedy is a tough one between different people, but this film will let down anyone who is accostomed to John C Reilly's humor with better writing and direction at the helm. This movie is more like "scary movie" or "Naked gun" than it is like "talladega nights", and John C Reilly is devoid of the personality that made him my favorite character actor in films like Boogie Nights, Gilbert Grape, or Casualties of War. Hopefully the low-point of his great career!

The Apatow troupe unpacks their trunks and tries out a spoof. It's amusing to see Jack White impersonate Elvis or Paul Rudd talk through his nose to play John Lennon, but generally the film is pallid mish-mash of styles that never develops any briskness in its pacing. Reilly is a game lead, perhaps too game. It seems he's studied too earnestly at the foot of his Talladega Nights co-star given his fervent adherence to Ferrell's First Law of Comedy: When in doubt, run around in your underpants.

As far as Judd Apatow movies go from the early 21st century, this movie doesn't hold up as well as others do. The Dewey Cox Story is every cliched musicians biography wrapped up in a early 2000's comedy movie. There are a lot of funny moments in this movie that probably landed a lot harder at that time but almost 20 years later don't really hold up. Kristen Wiig is really funny. I wish that Tim Meadows would have had a more fleshed out character, which can be said of most characters.
