A town of Blaine, Missouri is preparing for celebrations of its 150th anniversary. Corky St.Clair, an off-off-off-off-off-Broadway director is putting together an amateur theater show about the town's history, starring a local dentist, a couple of travel agents, a Dairy Queen waitress, and a car repairman. He invites a Broadway theater critic Mr. Guffman to see the opening night of the show.

Not bad, but Guest's whole "hahahhaa camp lispy like he's gay! LOL" character really brought it down. Also I saw it less than a week ago and remember almost nothing about it.

Still Christopher Guest's funniest movie. The characters feel so real and true to life (I'm from Missouri, which might help me relate to them a little). And it's this reality that makes the movie so damn funny. The ineptitude and sincerity with which these goofy people produce the play is just so satisfying to watch, and the final product is a sight to behold. Hilarious.

A charmingly droll, low-key delight which finds Guest (and Levy) walking the tightrope between acrid satire and compassion for their cast of self-obsessed eccentrics – cast to utter perfection, even down to the nominal co-stars; Doyle-Murray manages to steal a scene using pretty much utter silence! Its very small scale and limited focus means that it strains a little at times to justify feature length, but its such a sweet natured effort at heart that it proves difficult to resist.

The worse version of this film would be mean-spirited. It is a parody, but it still feels sensitive to its characters. Fred Willard doing his impressions wins the "funniest moment in this film" award. There were a lot of contenders.

The first half got the most laughs out of me, the second half isn't as hilarious but still really cute and charming. The entire film just has a sense of fun to it that really cheered up my evening. Wonderful cast and some amusing cameos to boot.

Really funny. I love the attention to detail and I love this group of actors and all the pathetic characters they played. This is probably my favorite Guest mockumentary, it was just so great. Parker Posey is great again and I really liked Eugene Levy's part in the film.

The charming thing about this movie is that the show they ended up putting on really wasn't that bad. Hell, some of the parts were genuinely good. The film doesn't offer many surprises, and I saw the end coming from a mile away, but that's okay. The humor here comes from the characters, and the plot is secondary. Highly enjoyable.

Several scenes feel like a set up without a punchline. The actual play, which takes up a large amount of the modest screen time, is bad, but not so bad it's funny (more like so bad it's boring).

There's a warm, folksy tone present throughout the film, but it suffers from too much focus resting on Guest's protagonist, who's not much more than a one-note homosexual stereotype. Too little screen time is afforded to the endearing but underdeveloped townsfolk, none of whom are substantially idiosyncratic for this kind of comedy to really lift off. As a result, this mockumentary struggles to generate many laughs.

I love and hate this type of movie. I loved the whole production of it but it makes me feel claustrophobic somehow. I don't want to watch it because I know that none of what is said is going to really blow my mind or make me laugh hysterically, I mostly watch it to see how absurd it gets and sometimes it makes me feel anxious for the characters as though I'm feeling their shame. So its like mental claustrophobia. Thats how I feel about Christopher Guest movies.

I didn't think it was particularly funny and I didn't enjoy seeing the play at the end, and felt that it was dragged out way too long. The nuances to each actor's performance is incredible, though. I prefer Best in Show.

This movie is pretty darn funny. Since I am an actor it is even funnier to me. I've been in some community shows and have seen some community theatre that is almost exactly like what this mockumentary portrays. I thought all the characters were really funny in their own way. The Dentist with illusions of grandeur, the power acting couple who get roles in everything and the list goes on and on. Guest did a fantastic job as the director. Some of the songs were actually catchy. I'm still humming.

This is a pretty fun little mockumentary. It has several awesome character actors whom I like a lot. I can't say I actually laughed out loud much, but it was quietly amusing. It has a great bunch of characters, all distinct and funny in their own right. Despite the musical the characters put on being purposely lame and silly, I still found it quite entertaining. The ending is brilliant too.

"Waiting For Guffman" is over just okay. It's mockumentary set up is at times engaging and other times off putting. The acting is mediocre especially actors who you know are funny like Eugene Levy. There are times when you laugh just because you feel like you are supposed to. It's deadpan humor does have its high points, the show they put on has some of the best laughs in the movie, and the ending is probably the best part once you get the joke.

Just gorgeous. THIS is how you do "charming and off-beat". Fantastic characters, made to seem very realistic with Christopher Guest's signature style of half improvised dialogue and "mockumentary". Guest is one of the most underrated writer/directors ever. Hilarious and touching. Never sentimental.

A character-driven comedy/mockumentary that works because it spoon-feeds us the quirky stereotypes rather than shoving them down our throats. Yes, everyone watching the movie knows that Corky St. Clair is gay, Catherine O'Hara is obnoxious, and Parker Posey can't dance, but no one in Blaine seems to notice, making the whole experience that much more awkward...and I mean awkward in a good way.

Since this is Christopher Guest's first ensemble film I just assumed that it would be pretty shaky. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's as strong as Best in Show. I was laughing throughout, although I should say that the actual performance at the end was easily the worst part of the movie. Other than that, great.

I work in theatre. This instilled in me a kind of existential horror. I found myself questioning art in a way I've not done since Exit through the Gift Shop. As far as the comedy goes, though, I've seen Christopher Guest do better. That said, the characters are better developed here than in later films.

The characters are poorly developed, if at all, the plot is lame and obvious, the musical numbers take up half the damn movie, and really aren't very good anyway, especially with the god-awful MIDI-generated music accompanying them. Guest relies on a lazy gay stereotype for his character, but the rest of the actors do a brilliant job, so there's that at least. It's also funny, for the most part.

The big problem with this movie is the character of Corky. Just not funny in the least and over played by Guest. alas, the film hinges on him so it doesn't really work. What does work is the performances by Eugene Levy, Parker Posy and Lewis Arquette. they're all great. Bob Balaban was good too. And including the show in the film was great. Christopher Guest surrounded himself with some of the funniest talent around and together they all created a wonderful and heartbreakingly hilarious tale about big dreams in a small city. Special noting should go to Catherine O'Hara, who's best work has always been in Guest films, for her funny and scene-stealing performance.

One of my favorite Christopher Guest films. I just like this premise a lot, and find the characters to be so earnest and pathetic in a way that really makes me want to cry forever... but then I laugh because I remember that the movie's supposed to be funny. And it is. It is very funny.
