Don't expect to win any followers with this take: plays like the movie I wanted Pan's Labyrinth to be. Lots of Del Toro influence beyond Pan's, The Devil's Backbone first and foremost. Quality film that goes very dark without getting pitch black.

A strong piece of work that pulls no punches. Could have leaned further into the horror component, but the heavy-hitting drama side of things compensates well enough. Impressive child performances from the whole cast. Reminiscent of Guillermo Del Toro's work, of course, but also reminded me in positive ways of City of God and the under-seen Under the Shadow from one year prior.

This checked all the boxes of horror for me: an interesting premise/setting, great imagery, real emotional depth, brilliant usage of child acting and children characters without being afraid to show the realities of what could happen to them, excellent soundtrack. Perfect ending; the contrast between the grimness throughout and the light at the end during the final shot was really powerful.

It was cool when the kid died.

Top badass moment? There’s a gun battle going on outside the classroom and everyone’s on the floor, but the teacher bravely tries to get on with the class. That’s got to get you a few ticks from Ofsted. The wishes are a bit of a MacGyver, but after that this is an emotional fuckfest, whilst the sound mixer demonstrates their love for rear mounted speakers. Also features a phone with an everlasting battery. Not a good advert for Mexican social services though. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

A movie that is both beautiful and ugly at the same time, the true horror is that while the person watching the movie is probably mostly safe and comfortable, kids are living in these perilous conditions for real somewhere. The fantasy elements are creepy and effective and the child actors do a wonderful job. Really just my kind of movie, I guess.

Bleak magical realism tale with ghosts, kids in trouble and life on the harsh streets. Stand By Me combined with del Toro.

Not much of a horror movie but actually a drama. And a brutal one at that. It pulls no punches, so avoid if you are feeling a bit down.

The blend of genres that Issa Lopez pulls off is a very satisfying way to tell a story. The storytelling and the performances from each child actor are what shine. The narrative gets pretty heavy handed, but this is understandable with such dark material.

"Tigers Are Not Afraid" is at once heartbreaking, horrifying, and brilliant. This can be a difficult film with challenging themes and imagery. I know that some may not be able to stomach some of the themes and events depicted. But if you can, it's a rewarding experience, which is a testament to the film and the talents involved. If the audience doesn't FEEL a film like this, then it wouldn't be worth your time. But with the emotion this film invokes, it's definitely a must see.
