"Oriental Elegy" is the first piece of the Japanese video cycle, the creation of which is still going on. The genre of this cycle can hardly be considered as documentary; perhaps only because the real people are represented there in their normal conditions and surroundings. (www.kinoglaz.fr)

Typically atmospheric and dense offering from Sokurov that transforms a sleepy Japanese fishing village into a kind of phantasmagorical setting that functions as a liminal space between life and death. Sokurov's moody meditations are an acquired taste, and his tendency towards mannerism is occasionally bothersome, but these blurry spectral images have a singular power that cannot possibly be confused for the work of other directors. The downside is that it's too short for its own good.
