An exceptionally strong interpretative start falls apart about a quarter of the way in . The film becomes a gentle meander through the many excellent productions of the Weimar Republic's film industry. Disappointing.

Very interesting premise but a bit dry and overly theoretical. Can't quite decide if it wants to present Kracauer's theory or a broad synopsis of the Weimar years.

Em honra de Thomas Elsaesser (1943 - 2019). Enquanto não reeditam o livro do Kracauer aqui no Brasil, vai tu mesmo. Box Obras-primas do Cinema Expressionismo Alemão Volume 1.

A "worthy" documentary with some rarely seen footage from early films and a somewhat monotonous German voiceover. Has a few interesting moments in the pieces it shows but you have to be pretty nerdy about cinema history to get a lot out of it.

A detailed and incisive chronology; on Germany's post-World War condition, giving rise to one of the most fertile periods in film history, and subsequently suppressed by the Nazis. What a treasure trove of film clips, including plenty of more obscure examples apart from the usual suspects of Lang, Murnau, Lubitsch, and Pabst. One point of odd manipulation: it includes Thomas Elsaesser, who wrote contradictory to Kracauer's theories, but that's not made abundantly clear while viewing this film.
