Ishikawa, a newspaper journalist, unexpectedly meets Asako, a woman who used to work for his company some time ago as a phone operator. Three years ago, she accidentally heard the voice of a suspect who committed a still-unresolved homicide. Since then, the suspect's voice has remained lodged in her mind as a terrifying memory. One night, her husband invites over his colleagues, Kawai, Hamazaki, and Muraoka. She realizes that Hamazaki's voice sounds exactly the same as the unseen suspect's! (imdb)

Early Suzuki effort which starts off as a woman in peril film, and then evolves into a procedural/whodunit. And that is a bit of a shame as she is sent to background and the reporters that are investigating the case are not as interesting - additionally the most colorful character of the film exits way too quickly. The resolution is overly complicated and not very plausible. I liked the cinematography, specific scenes and use of exteriors. It's OK overall, but less than the sum of its parts.

This had a good balance of Seijun Suzuki style and a solid script to make this a fun watch. While Seijun Suzuki isn't a very consistent director for me, Jô Shishido nearly always makes any movie better. This had a bit of a Hitchcock feel to it that I liked.

80 where "80" says no masterpiece but a definite watch, Add points if you like (well done) views of a Japan lost to time. Well made old style drama from the old journalist turns detective genre. Pretty much everything about this one is above average, plot, pacing, story, sets, acting and camerawork. Maybe a little overdone by the female lead early on but that's the only fault I saw...and it does drop that aspect as it unfolds.. Saw as a remastered(?) version, very nicely upgraded.

Suzuki, as always it seems, elevated even his average material into something inviting, visceral, and exciting. It is just this elevation of the average that calls attention, here, to Suzuki's strong female characters. There's also a nightmare scene, a metaphor for murder, that is a standout among other films Suzuki had his mits on.
