In the Roman countryside during the Second World War, two American soldiers are hidden in a country house. One evening one of the soldiers, while drunk, meets a German soldier, equally drunk, and the two strike up a friendship. However the next day, when the drink has worn off, the war makes its presence felt once again as the Germans shoot the landlord who has been hiding the two Americans. (bfi)

Life in a little Italian village during the war. There sure was a lot going on, as in all over the place. Became almost vulgar. But I can't say I was bored with my introduction into Luigi Zampa's works.

Far inferior to "Angelina", another Zampa/Suso Cecchi d'Amico collaboration released the same year and starring Anna Magnani, but by no means bad. In "To Live in Peace" they seem to be enjoying the novelty of John Kitzmiller (an African-American ex-soldier who stayed in Italy to act), but everything is fairly basic war melodrama stuff, with very few surprises.
