Tsai's style is still developing at this point. He's trying out the techniques and themes that would become his trademarks, but he hasn't mastered them yet. Although there are some great moments, the dead space here feels like truly dead space, as not relevatory as it is in the later films. So, this is second-tier Tsai to me, and the really good stuff doesn't start happening until The Hole. The final scene is devastating, though.

Ming-liang Tsai's entire body of work is built on liminal time and place, the abstract passages where people miss connections. In this film, he is able to evoke those feelings out of the most intimate spaces of the home; where else is a person more vulnerable than in either the bath or the bed? The heir to Antonioni's stake on urban alienation.

I thought Jeanne Dielman was slow, but this one is right there too. Who would have thought a story about three people sharing an apartment unbeknownst to each other wouldn't be a comedy? I'll just have to shrug and say I must have missed something in the translation.

everyones selling these spaces for human bodies, clothes, apartments, graves for ashes. but we don't see anyone making any deals. just hovering in this interspace of transactionality

ilginç bir final tercihi. izlerken pek bir basit geldi ama sonraları zihnime ara ara uğradığını fark ettim bu sonun. Tsai Ming-Liang tam olarak bu olsa gerek..

Loneliness and boredom in a city dominated by brands, noise, and transactions - characters sell memorial services, real estate and clothes in the street; nearly no home, no family, no life beyond the job and the one they live in the ap - where there is simply no room for love. An empty flat as retreat, shelter, 'motel'. Catharsis - crying - is left for last, at a devastated park. Capitalist promised big things, but all they have is mattress with no sheets, Bud cans and bowling with watermelon.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

My PSI thought I'd like a slow-paced film which ends with 7 minutes of a woman sitting in a car crying? Lol...I guess the 90s nostalgia looks nice and there are some good moments here and there but it's a pretty bland watch.

Another beautiful movie by Ming-liang Tsai about lonely souls in a modern metropolis looking for some human connection.

The very last scene felt contrived, too heavy-handed, too neat, which sort of ruins it, other than that this is really, really good in my opinion.

Better than I remembered it. The loneliness in the face of sales, sales, sales, is palpable, while characters throw themselves into sexual circumstances which have no hope of bringing real fulfillment. Mei's heartbreaking conclusion to the film offers a moment (or more!) of pathos in response to this cold modern wasteland.

A beautifully crafted look at the struggle to communicate in a city, a place where alienation and disconnection abound. Rare moments of humour lighten the load of entering into this world where scarce conversation is used primarily for business and little else. The final six minutes are masterful and devastating.
