Spain was still under the boots of Franco and his henchmen, good Spanish movies were made in France...or Mexico. The vision of the Spanish civil war was ubiquitous and Arrabal's movies tried to exorcise the past.

Eu espero que o Arrabal e as crianças que participaram desse filme tenham feito terapia em algum momento de suas vidas.

The surrealist imagery does more to intrude than complement the main narrative (and the Windows Movie Maker effects aren't that impressive today). Apart from that, this is an insane piece of Panic art, mixing pedophilic incest, political outrage, blasphemy, and animal sacrifice all into one oddball pot bound to quench anyone's hunger for the the most extreme, shocking, and visceral cinema the medium has to offer. Bon appetit

Arrabal uses a wild array of vulgar and over-the-top symbolic devices and oftens goes for the shock effect. But the film had a delicious, no-holds-barred energy that I just loved. It's definitely not for everyone, though.

One of the very few film adaptations that is actually better than the book! Great film! It's like Jodorowsky mixed with Pasolini.

There are some interesting ideas and moments in the film, but the Oedipal tension and blatant use of color tinting got old pretty quick.
