Vision Quest

Louden Swain is the horniest movie teenager you've never heard of. Pitching Vision Quest to someone makes it sound like the driest movie imaginable, a wrestler wants to lose 20lbs and he falls in love with some older girl. Well I'd let Linda Fiorentino absolutely destroy my life. A killer soundtrack throughout, Lunatic Fringe is the coolest song to skip rope to.

My experience on the wrestling team is completely unlike anything Matthew Modine went through in this film. I didn't have to lose weight to fight a villain, nor did my dad let a woman in her mid-20s stay at our house. However, I did once get a nosebleed.

I mainly watched this again after many years because the more recent wrestling flick, Legendary, put me in the mood. The guy who plays Louden does a good job as an awkward high-schooler, and I enjoyed the 80's music, but that's really about all that's positive here. The wrestling is more flashy than realistic, and the vision quest part is muddled with a quest to get laid. But there's the 80's for you. Biggest takeaway is I really do not miss cutting weight for wrestling.

This meandering, irritating & bland teen sports drama features pretty enjoyable performances from Fiorentino, Zuniga (for all 5 minutes she's on screen) & JC Quinn, but it also features an awful lead performance by Modine. The story is full of inconsistencies, the tone is all over the place, the characters are all flat, & there's so, so much terrible dialogue. The soundtrack is good, but every song is overplayed to the point of being annoying. It's a boring slog that deserves to be forgotten.
