Young Hildegard, being the offspring of a noble family, comes to the Benedictine cloister Disibodenberg at the age of 8. There, she is raised by the nun Jutta of Sponheim and is taught medical science and music. Later, when Hildegard is grown up, she admits to have visions of God. The church leaders are appalled and regard her as a heretic. But Hildegard holds on to her ideas and pushes the construction of i.e. the Rupertsberg nunnery.

Sukowa is effective in the lead but I feel like it didn't explain Hildegard's achievements in the arts/sciences very well. Maybe it's a tough needle to thread. It's fair for the filmmakers to bet on some assumed knowledge, because why would I watch the movie about Hildegard von Bingen if I didn't already know who she was? And yet, if it's not going to show why she's important then why would I watch the movie about Hildegard von Bingen?

Hildegard of Bingen provides an interesting subject and Barbara Sukowa's performance is outstanding, but the screenplay is disappointing. Hildegard's music isn't showcased in the film and there is no attempt to represent her religious visions *ahem* visually.

Good performance by the lead actress. A couple of strange and cheesy camera tricks were used to represent her visions from God. Ultimately, it took the religious aspects too literally for my secular tastes.

"There are lengthy sections solely concerned with covering historical ground in which the platonic intimacy between the magistra and the pupil is completely forgotten." - Diego Costa

"Unafraid of her subject's complexity, von Trotta shows Bingen's weaknesses as part of her humanity, as in her attachment to novice Richardis von Stade, who rouses the other, narcissistic side of Bingen's will."
