Take it for what it is; dumb fun with heart, no layer of commentary needed for what it's going for. I once said I wanted to make a film with wholesome violence and this is what I meant.

Hilarious, gory and oddly full of the Xmas spirit. Sure it borrows from other movies yet that's fine. David Harbour is great as Santa.

John Leguizamo is the lump of coal in this. Ho ho holy guacamole when its fun though its fun, a little disappointed didn't get a peak at Mrs C If this was brave it'd be Tim Allen.

Too damn long and silly to generate any interest beyond some fun gory killings and Leguizamo/Harbour's cheesy acting.

While "Violent Night" delivers on its promise of holiday-themed violence and action, it falls short in its attempts at humor and story development. Harbour's performance and the inventive action sequences are enough to make it worth a watch for fans of the genre, but it ultimately fails to fully deliver on its potential.

Pretty peak dumb movie. The general vibe is similar to Die Hard (one man has to save a group of hostages while sneaking around) but made slightly more original with Santa very clumsily fighting bad guys. If you wanted to watch a world star video starring Santa clause, then this is up your alley

This is like Bad Santa, with the same cheesy aspects and lots of bad language and violence (but of course!) but its not as funny or just good (in a bad way) as Bad Santa is, in my opinion. Most of it just seemed like constant violence for violence sake - I don't mind a fast moving action film but I didn't fully follow the plot so much. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention but im not convinced. Its got some amusing moments and its pretty entertaining in an easy to watch, basic way I guess.

This is a fun holiday action flick. David Harbour is good i n the lead role and John Leguizamo is good as the villain. Overall I would recommend this film.

Tommy Wirkola of Dead Snow fame weighs in on Christmas with this tale of Santa saving a rich family from a pack of thieving mercenaries. David Harbour as a weary immortal Viking version of Saint Nick is the highlight of this goofy, gory treat. The story is nothing special but the cast is mostly decent, and the filmmakers keep the tone light in a nice contrast with the extreme violence on display.

The entire cast seems to just be having a blast making this film and how could you not. David Harbour is great, and this movie is a great time for adults after the kids fall asleep.

Slept through most of the second half. The violence was very repetitive. I think they were going for a "Bad Santa" vibe, with gore in place of cursing. Would have worked better as a short, something like "Kung Fury".

I was expecting a horror film, so I was surprised at the Bad Santa - Die Hard - Home Alone hybrid that I got, but I quite enjoyed it. Harbour is good as Santa, others Ok, but pretty typical. Tone is a bit uneven and gets too splatter-y towards the end, which is fun but not really needed. Cutting 10 mins from the film would have done wonders to its re-watchability, but it was still fun to see this on the big screen before the holidays. I doubt there will be another X-Mas film as good this season.

Harbour was really enjoyable as Santa. I laughed too much at him saying, "Santa Claus is coming to town." He handled the physicality well. Fun action scenes. A heartwarming Christmas tale. Is it an all-time great? Nah. But is it a hell of a lot of fun? Yup.

Great fun. Harbour being an excellent actor doesn't hurt either. Not as shallow as you might think--doesn't take itself too seriously, but there is an air of self-awareness about it. Definitely a good theater experience.

There might be some lulls where the movie stops on its tracks for little reason, but when it delivers on the action, it truly delivers.

It’s exactly what you think it is, which isn’t a criticism. The film is heavily influenced by classics like Die Hard, but rather than try to coyly ape from it, the film brazenly mirrors iconic shots and sequences. I also appreciate Harbour and what he’s doing, but I think he could’ve gone a little further. It’s the rich family that often stops the film dead because they’re not funny enough and there’s absolutely no avenue to care about them. Overall, crass and gory and a touch uneven, but fun.

The action scenes were fine, though they weren't as well shot as Nobody or Bullet Train. The pacing was off: the little girl and Santa scenes dragged on, a lazy attempt to wedge a Hallmark Christmas movie into an action flick. Meanwhile, the rich, spoiled family members were left underused.

Fatman and Home Alone on steroids. It's mostly fun, and as the title promises - violent. A lot of jokes about balls though, and not the jolly kind.

Certainly one of the better movies in the “Die Hard, but” subgenre. Somehow Santa gets mixed up with the grand/-daughter of Dark Money-laundering mercenary pseudo-politicians, but by the end of the film he’s taught them the spirit of Christmas and they wave him goodbye like in a Lifetime holiday special. (The seredipity of this sharing an ending with Eggers’ The Northman is, just.) Best moment is a Home Alone sequence - the actors nail it.

I hope you don't come to this hanging your hat on quality of performance. David Harbour is great, and bless John Leguizamo because he's trying. I came to this for a super-stylish, highly-violent Santa movie, and therefore got exactly what I wanted - even a little more! Felt throughout like a David Leitch movie, though lacking some of his style; Tommy Wirkola is credited as director, but Leitch's fingerprints are all over this. The scene with the Bryan Adams song was worth the price of admission.

I probably wouldn't call this a great film but it is quite fun and I do really appreciate how it commits, without a shred of irony, to being both a violent R-rated action movie and a family film about discovering the meaning of Christmas. I can already see that this is going to be a cult Holiday favorite for years to come.

This was a fun movie. A little too gory in several scenes for a Xmas themed comedy. The fight scenes went on for a minute or so longer than needed, which could have easily cut ten minutes out of the film. Still, I enjoyed it very much. Definitely not for children. The title is very appropriate. Also, David Harbour is terrific in this.

Tone is really mangled, could do without so much cringy pg family stuff, but the r rated gorefest we were promised delivered. The sound design during the fight scenes was spectacular. Harbour is phenomenal here. It's a B movie that I loved the good parts so much that the awful parts didn't drop it too much. 6.8.

The meaning of Christmas, genuine belly laughs of all varieties, and dismembered bodies all rolled into one. There isn't anything particularly original going on with all of these pieces, but they work incredibly well together in Violent Night. It's an awful lot of fun, and a newfound Christmas staple for adults.

Violent Night has all the staples of a Xmas film; family drama, a sprinkle of romance, a cute kid, presents, armed criminals attempting to steal a large some of money, and Santa bashing people with a hammer. All the characters are terrible people (barring the little girl whose innocence is only a virtue of her youth). But it's a fun film that plays with Xmas clichés, though the 3rd act is a bit of a let down. Harbour carries the film.
