As a modern-day Scandinavian, there's a certain (sobering) shock value to seeing a plot in the brother tongue that we're so used to keeping at arm's length as something OTHER Europeans did. Historical dramas always tend to have a filter of Somehow, The Good Old Days which Viften cheerfully subverts in its tale of how violence and oppression trickles down ("Once you earn your freedom, you can afford your own slaves!") until it rises back up. Some flat characterization and plotting keeps it down.
