I think if they had just stuck to making this an action flick it would have been better and more memorable. The dramatic scenes aren't done that well and end up dragging the movie along. If you're going to make it so clearly fiction then don't even bother trying to make us care.

Genius rescue plan kills more people than it saves. Everybody cheers. Just perfect. The movie's message seems to be that capitalism is ruining mountaineering, but then it forgets to conclude that part of the story and just becomes a drama about survival, explosives, and cutting ropes. Can't tell if this is the Armageddon of mountaineering or the Hackers of mountaineering. Maybe a bit of both? Too bad it doesn't have the redeeming qualities of either one.

Too silly and striving for a dramatic import that just isn't there, but it's tough to deny that Campbell knows how to film an action scene; this is peppered with enough white-knuckle moments that you can almost forgive the lack of logic in the relationships and motivations - and the various contrivances necessary to make a foolhardy mission even more zanily dangerous (nitro glycerin???) Performed adequately enough under the circumstances, with Glenn matching Lance Henriksen as a portent of doom.

Martin Campbell has done decent movies but this one was a bit risky, like jumping from cliff. And he did not land well. Cast is mediocre, script is predictable - you can really tell which character dies next. Go to skiing and pass this movie.

I love mountain climbing movies. There is so few of the, that i tend to forgive the many weaknesses. This is definetely weaker than the incredible Cliffhanger, but it is solid and at times breathtaking entertainment.

Far better than I expected, Vertical Limit makes a successful disaster movie formula applied to mountain climbing, a lot like Twister (especially with the inclusion of Bill Paxton) but with avalanches instead of tornadoes and less character development. The constant layer upon layer of high altitude mishap and a body count that puts it almost into slasher film territory, makes the whole film somewhat arduous. But with the limited selection of movies about mountaineering, it stands out.

This movie has some obvious flaws and has trouble getting past the stereotypes of this genre. You also have to realize that the guy leads several members of his team to their deaths in a selfish attempt to rescue one person. It has it's moments, but for the most part, the movie is incredibly forgettable.

Originally written as a Schwarzenegger vehicle (which would've been like his take on Stallone's 'Cliffhanger), this one's somewhat forgettable but entertaining in the moment; ultimately worth its plate of mountain-climbing action sequences and dialogue such as: "The nitro!... It's gonna blow!" It's also the last movie I remember seeing Chris O'Donnell in.
