What this incredibly awesome gem lacks in story, it completely makes up for with style and coolness.

This movie is one of the most badass Japanese movies I've ever seen. The bad guys are hilarious, fun action, a pretty boy kicking ass 2 hours long. I had seriously a fucking great time. Extremely rewatchable too

This is one the best B-movies ever. The action is outstanding, the acting and camerawork way over the top and the story sort of non-existing...but when yakuza gang-members return from the dead wielding guns, who needs much plot anyway? This little gem can be watched over and over again.

Go into this movie expecting a quirky Japanese film with tons of fake blood and illogical fights with guns and swords and shit, and you'll walk away satisfied that this film did it's work. Not the best of this genre, but it wasn't the worst either.

There are a lot of ifs that would've made this a much better movie (the positive score tells you that I still liked it however). If the story would've been better, if the movie hadn't been as long, and if they wouldn't have fucked up the BEST character in the movie half-way in (seriously, the Yakuza leader was hilarious/badass, and they fucking ruined him). It could've been a LOT better, but the first half is still VERY viewable/enjoyable.

Utter shit from any kind of cinematic point of view, but the most entertaining utter shit ever committed to celluloid. Get the ULTIMATE version and a whole lot of booze for maximum satisfaction.

This movie is pretty bonkers. It's like The Matrix meets Evil Dead meets Trigun. It's does seem to drag on a bit. They could've cut a bit of the unnecessary sub-plot stuff. The action and the general craziness makes up for it.

This film could have been 40 minutes shorter (and 20 points better) if you had cut down on the endless scenes of people pointing weapons at each other and/or stumbling through the forest.

If you can get past the cheap, ugly visual presentation, this is a ton of goofy fun. Does not take itself seriously in the slightest.

Actually just a plotless 130 minute action sequence in a random forest. I'd hesitate to even call it a splatter film. While there are a few gory moments, it's mostly anime poses with guns and bloodless hand to hand combat - there's very little in the way of special effects in the film at all. There's hardly any of the amazing makeup or choreography or completely batshit weirdness I love from the best examples of the genre, and the only way it's really excessive or shocking is in it's runtime.

(Ultimate Version) There is some backstory about a portal to hell and reasons why the characters are in the forest, but those are just an excuse for highly entertaining, greatly filmed crazy wild non-stop (zombie) action. It's a real fun mishmash of genres, and it is clear that RK was influenced not just by Japanese but by cult movies from all over the world. F.e. the zombies are more Fulci that Romero, the bullet action is straight out of Hong Kong, it has a Raimi feel to at times.

It's almost like a Japanese version of Bad Taste. A low-budget movie that basically consists of a bunch of guys fighting outdoors. Unfortunately, that really IS pretty much the whole movie, and it doesn't do a great job of carrying it through 2 hours.

[Review of the Ultimate Versus edition]: The director, Kitamura, and his film crew journeyed into a forest to produce this dazzlingly weird film. The acting is certainly cliche but the stunning cinematography helps to liven deadpan reactions. The fight scenes are lovingly crafted and interesting to watch. The story and plot fall flat, and the third act drags horrendously (especially with the final battle) but this film is still refreshing to watch if you can handle its quirky Japanese flavor.

Slick and well-imagined, but something was just slightly... off about the whole thing. I kept waiting for the movie to "happen" and it kept restarting its premise, like an old car whose engine keeps almost turning over when you turn the key.

It's hard to really rate Versus because it succeeds so well at what it sets out to do, it's just that what it sets out to do seems so bland by comparison to better movies of this type. The action is good, the story is compelling although somewhat unexplained after all is said and done, and the characters are interesting. All that being said it feels like it takes a long time to get next to nothing done, so overall it's really hard to appreciate objectively.

There are 666 portals blah blah... Jumping, katana wielding, gun yielding otherwise slow as hell zombies. After 15 minutes I started to wonder if it was all a joke, it wasn't. Infact the movie proved to be nonstop action with little dialogue and lots of cockiness. It has a mild but continuous self awareness which makes it even more stupid and fun at the same time. Can get to you if you're in the mood.

If you're not on board when the main character just happens to find a stylish full-length leather trenchcoat in the woods, and thus proceeds to don it while a hot guitar lick wails away on the soundtrack - well, then this movie may not be for you.
