Gritty, violent, nasty, sleazy, messy... yes, but not as distasteful as I expected & in a way that feels oh-so JC; kinda like an exploitation western with fantasy horror elements. A foul-mouthed vampire hunter trained by the catholic church road-tripping with a telepathic prostitute (Sheryl Lee, AKA Laura Palmer) is not to be taken seriously, and if you don't, it's a good time. Woods is entertaining here as an unapologetic asshole; a better-developed antagonist would have elevated things.

What a letdown from John Carpenter, though I'm not a fan of action vampire mob movies (Priest). Unsound room clearing tactics. Or just knock the fucking house down. I didn't understand why guns were used if they're useless and there's no knockback. The priest character went from annoying to Rambo quick. Woods' exposition of his parents was not enough to overcome his unlikeable character. Terrible female characters. The lore could be interesting with the priests. Fav scene: guy split in half.

Yes it carried on the blood-chilling tradition of Village of the Damned: being disappointing when you have a crazy James Woods fighting vampires. Whenever Daniel Baldwin leaves a room people mutter "gross" under their breath

The closest that Carpenter came to ever making an out-an-out Western, Vampires is an evocative, atmospheric horror that was the last showcase for the master's talent, even if it's nowhere near his best work. Vividly shot in moody red hues by Kebbe, Vampires captures the burning twilight hour where creatures gather to hunt for blood. It also contains a more involving story than most Carpenter films, featuring a group of vampire slayers led by Woods funded by the Catholic church. Underrated.

In '98 over-the-top vampire action was a fairly unused concept and John Carpenter used it in a seriously action packed manner, while keeping only minimal horror. It's just a different kind of movie, those qualities make it neither good nor bad, but I really did love this movie.

Directorially, Carpenter seems to be as apathetic as he is in interviews. This could've been a genre cult classic, but the fight scenes are not much better than what he would've done in his indie years. Story-wise, the hero's another cliched, one-note Snake Plisken (but jerkier) & although burning vampires is a good visual, isn't it quicker to stake them? The only interesting elements for me was Baldwin's character, who always seemed capable of anything & how he saves Woods from the cross.

The vampires it features are brutal, yes, but that and the makeup applied to their faces are just about the best things I can say about the film. It's not scary, it doesn't feature characters you'll care about, and the writing was terrible. At times, it plays out like it wants to make fun of the genre, but most of the time it takes itself too seriously for shoddy special effects to not appear like the film was incredibly low-budget. And, it's not bad enough to laugh at and have fun that way.

There was plenty of concept material to work with here the idea of a Vatican hired vamp hunter is interesting but the movie throws it all down the drain. The action scenes were mostly terrible and you could just watch the film trailer and get all you need to know from it.

Beh. That's really all you can say about that. I mean, James Woods might have been cool, but the script was awful and whenever Daniel Baldwin is in a movie, it is instantly bad. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

carpenter might have actually made this a classic if he didn't make it during the 90s when he somehow forgot he was talented. i liked the gore. its just that the feel of the whole movie seemed a decade or so out of place. oh and that main musical theme annoyed the hell out of me because it starts out sounding like "riders on the storm" but isn't "riders on the storm"

James Wood is good. Aside from the great tradition of vampires sucking blood out of people and staying out of daylight and the previous mention, this is mainly all fail. 38 points for those two, and an additional 5 for the fact that Carpenter released Halloween twenty-years earlier. What a shame he came up with this.

It's uneven but I'd be lying if I said that overall I didn't enjoy it. It's got a decent enough premise that's fresh enough to not make it feel like you've seen it all before and James Woods is good. It's got a view laughs in for good measure as well. Enjoyable for vampire movie fans.

Dull Carpenter stab at the vampire craze of the 90s never gets off the runway with its intriguing set-up, and slightly off-centre casting of its lead characters (teaming up Woods, Lee and Baldwin is a nice combo). It all ultimately adds up to nothing, with good actors failing to bring much spark to their paper-thin characters, and even Carpenter seeming to be resting on his laurels behind the camera.

I had high hopes when the squad all died proceeding the intro sequence. Carpenter never fails to fail, here in a Tarantino-esquè fashion (albeit a-là Dusk 'til Dawn). Suddenly: "Come with me. Did he bite you? B*tch! ... Wait, I can use you! "-Woody "C'mon, leave the b*tch! She's f*ckin dead anyways."-Baldwin Jr. "Just take her. I can use her!"-J. Wood Harrelson Ohh John Carpenter, you poet laureate. You just keep on believing that you're "better all-around than Kubrick". Somebody has to.

Very entertaining action scenes and a great sense of atmosphere can only do so much when your main characters are so horribly unlikable, especially Baldwin, whose deeply uncomfortable scene in the hotel room immediately made me hate him. The movie also tries too much to talk down to previous vampire lore, yet it keeps wooden steaks and serious religious politics, so much so you can't tell if it's a satire or not. All in all, a weak effort and a big disappointment from an iconic director.

It has Woods as sort of an action hero (pretty laughable), and one of the Baldwin clones as a latino character for some reason. The plot is thin, the acting is terrible, and there's very little gore. Also, Woods' character seems to have a weird fixation on other men's penises. Perhaps it was meant to be funny? It is not.

The dialogue was funny because it was so over the top. What was Jack's obsession with male genitalia? I lost count of how many times he mentioned it. As he is about to be burned to death he says, "my nuts are on fire here" in such a hilarious way that I had to rewind and watch again. It was fun to watch vampires have their heads cut off and lit on fire. I'm not sure why they choose to write off almost all vampire folklore except daylight and stakes.

Perhaps it was just because I saw SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS the previous day, but the spirited nihilism of the opening half hour seemed somehow to be evoking the My Lai massacre, but if so, any allegorical significance contained in the remainder of the movie was not easy to locate. Has a few moments.

A very low point in Carpenter's career, along with 'Ghosts of Mars' later on, although the problem with this against the later film is that it's just dull and insipid, with nothing to jump out and define it out of all the other generic vampire films in existence. The only virtue of it is James Woods, who's charismatic and funny even in a pointless film like this.

Hard-core horror hounds aren't likely to be disappointed with this straight-ahead gore orgy hampered only by a relatively weak ending. An intense Woods leads the way. While it bears a passing resemblance to _Blade_, Carpenter takes less of a comic-book and more of a vintage-western tack (a la his urban _Rio Bravo_ update, _Assault on Precinct 13_). Subtlety and subtext are not strong points here, but Carpenter amply delivers the horror goods in a film abetted by evocative location lensing
