After decades of Abbott & Costello meeting Universal Classic Monsters, a standup comedy horror picture was past due. Yet, I expected more from a Wes Craven film: namely some semblance of thrills, gore, suspense, or a cool final action scene. The vampire seduction subplot is horrible and closer to stalking than a gothic romance. And Eddie Murphy mistakenly forces too much of himself onto the movie, including some make-up bits later recycled for the Nutty Professor. Avoid at all costs.

A bit unfairly demonized. Comedy doesn't always delivers as expected -- too many NY stereotypes and few actual good jokes --, but this kinda works as an Eddie romantic horror vehicle -- he manages to make some gore, some seduction and also to show his ability to portray various characters (reverend preaching about how evil is good is just hilarious). Too bad Angela's character is so poorly written. Either way, is draws some mythological connection to Serpent and the Rainbow.

Not as bad as the masses would have you believe, but Wes Craven's stab at this specific kind of racial humor is very rough. I laughed at a few things but I found Eddie Murphy to be insufferable, which is too bad considering this was probably the start of his downward spiral. An interesting experiment with more than a few cringe worthy lines.

What was this movie about again? Not committed enough for its comedy or its melodrama to feel welcome. One HILARIOUS scene, though, involving a dog.

I bet on paper it looked so good. Wes craven, just coming off his massive success with scream 1, combined with the always funny and charming Eddie Murphy ( or so they thought) and a suave , well scripted horror story is a guaranteed success. Unfortunately this movie was way past Murphy's prime and the script was half decent at best. Still entertaining enough.

For years I've criticized Murphy for not working with the best directors or powerful female co-stars. But he does that here, and his movie is still a clunker. Relatives are listed in the credits; maybe he needs to stop trying to completely control the films he makes. Either that or it's time for another stand-up concert film.

It's like Eddie Murphy thought he was making" Interview with the Vampire" / "Bram Stroker's Dracula" but it turned out more like "Booty Call" / Some B-Grade vampire flick.

Bad plot and a super easy out for "new" vampires. What happened new V.W.U. (Vampire's Working Union) bylaws? Although the ghoul was kinda fun.

What the? Huh? This is Eddie Murphy? Where's the funny? Where's the romance? This is one of Murphy's worst films, but at least it's not Pluto Nash, Probably the worst vampire movie I've ever seen (even worse that Dracula, Dead and Loving It).

A masterpiece in urban horror-comedy, it's not. Which is a shame, because with this cast and director, it could have been very possible. Instead, all we got was a schlocky mess.

I vaguely remember seeing this back in the day and honestly... I thought it would be better. Some of the jokes are okay, but overall the whole feeling of the movie was "Eddie Murphy wants to look fabulous" and it just didn't work. The plot was predictable and the fun was mostly in a few side characters (two of them played by Murphy himself) and not really in the main story. Still, a fun little 90's romp. The preacher telling everyone that ass is good. That one got me.

The peril with comedies is, if they're not funny, they're irredeemable. Here, much of the humour from the supporting cast, instead of being finely crafted jokes, is ad hoc funnies thrown out with the hope that they'll work--but they don't. Eddie Murphy is still marginally amusing but the rest of the cast doesn't have his comedic talent and would have benefited from more thought-out jokes. This movie's humour is not its only failing. Pacing and editing are also poor. It's a holistic pass.

This is an average Eddie Murphy movie. Which is kind of odd, considering his movies are either really good, or really bad.
