Science-fantasy in which a wandering samurai of sorts saves the day. It is engaging enough at the outset but soon devolves into a showcase for lovingly detailed gore. At every turn it's amusingly convinced of its own coolness, like when a kid writes a story and ends every sentence with an exclamation mark.

Grungy, fast paced anime can’t overcome weak and familiar plotting, and a perhaps par for the course sleazy tone, but it’s view of its world and intriguing design of its characters help almost win the day; nicely animated scenes of bone crunching gore help maintain interest.

Combine the enjoyably batshit insanity of Ninja Scroll with Castlevania, and you basically have Vampire Hunter D. It has pacing issues, as most anime films do, but the first five minutes has a dinosaur, werewolf & vampire, so whatevs.

Fantastic visuals, with the repetition and over-use of the same frames common of the era. I respect their lack of exposition and respect of the audience to understand the inferences. Makes for a more engaging watch through to assume and have some answers (is his horse mechanical? Magical? Just a horse? unknown. There is an overly rushed pace however, and they fail to flesh out the story sufficiently in the time taken.

Outstanding animation, excellent combat sequences, and solid story.

Love the animation, the cheap synth soundtrack and the blend of european gothic and techno-futurism but the story is seriously undercooked garbage.

D is a pretty Kenshiro-esque 80s hero, traveling the world all stoically and using his unstoppable badass powers to fight evil and rescue the damsel. But this is great because it has lots of nutty supernatural elements with that rough-around-the-edges look of 80s anime.

Pretty good quite early anime as far full length features flick go. It definitely has the Manga Entertainment style running through it; no holding back blood, guts, gore, and good looking ladies. The story is fairly good and the characters are interesting. The talking hand is weird and funny?

Great anime, because it doesn't focus on high school, goofy action-hero nonsense or panty shots.

An entertaining anime film, though, surprisingly, not as good as its sequel.

Anime is an acquired taste. Once you have the taste for it, VH-D is one of the very best anime movies out there. A nice, kind of unique storyline. A talking hand. And plenty of blood. It's a lot of fun.

One of the better anime I've seen, there's lots of blood and angst.

Pretty damn decent idea for a horror film that's ruined by uncreative and thoroughly silly treatment

I'm pretty sure people who are voting on VH-D are mixing it with its 2001 sequel VH-D:Bloodlust, because the first one is absolutely rubbish.
