Really charming movie that, unlike most teen films at the time, has a heart. The film makes a few minor missteps, but most of it rings true with a rather accurate portrait of teenage love. Features a performance by Nic Cage that makes you realize he was a promising actor at one point. It also happens to have one hell of a soundtrack.

The movie itself is not in 3D, but your face is! I enjoyed this thoroughly. Fascinating to see Nic Cage in what is basically his Better Off Dead. Really strong soundtrack. It's tripindicular and you know it.

This movie just made me want to watch "Fast Times" for the 27th time. Stuck around only for Josie Cotton's rendition of "Johnny Are You Queer", and you should, too. One of the great, overlooked punk classics.

Fun early 80's Romeo+Juliet variation with clashing of yuppie and punk cultures. A very young Cage and Foreman are good leads. There are a lot of cool shots of L.A and
a soundtrack full of tunes from the era. Actually, at times it feels like you're watching a long music video. They should have concentrated a bit more on the screenplay instead. But, even now the characters are more interesting and believable than 90% of other films in the genre.

This was a pretty fun (and extremely 80s) teen romance. There are some undeniable weaknesses when it comes to the script, but it treats most of its characters surprisingly well and does not devolve into a raunchy sex comedy. Cage and Foreman are very good as the leads, and I enjoyed the soundtrack a lot.

Top badass moment? The first 10 minutes; I’m sorry that makes me a pukeoid, but it’s a candidate for the most air-headed conversation, ever. Fortunately, Nicolas Cage is bitchin’ and Deborah Foreman is totally tubular in a very 80’s way. In fact the film's so early 80s that it immediately made me go and make a compilation cassette for a girl and take a Polaroid of my LED watch, whilst pressing the fiddly button in the side so the time actually shows. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

The tone of the film was all over the place. The expected culture clash breakup was too wishy-washy and abrupt, just like the reconciliation was poorly supported. Food fight. Graduate ending. Interesting '80s slang. Fav scene: '80s girls sleepover/hangout. Rewatch: liked it more, mostly for Nick Cage, after a podcast convinced me.

Very annoying film. Nic Cage couldn't ruin it, not save it (depending on whatever your perception of him is), because this film was already fucked up beyond any repair when the idea of making a Romeo&Juliet set in a shopping mall was conceived. Every character in this film is a horrible person and deserves a graphically violent death. All the 'totally tubular' 'bitchin'' talk made me want to revive everyone I murdered with my mind so I could kill them again.

I saw this film in the theater in 1983 and 14 year old Richard really loved it. It's one of the few films where my teen affection hasn't waned at all, so I'm tempted to declare this a masterpiece. I know it's not. What it is is exceptionally good for a low budget teen comedy made to exploit a popular song.

A noble effort to escape the doldrums of 80s teen comedies can’t hit the heights of say RISKY BUSINESS, but does endeavour to present its hormonally charged cast of characters as authentically as possible, helped by Cage and Foreman who make a likable pair. Frustrating that there is a lack of tension and conflict in the story as it plays out, spending too much time on vignettes involving Foreman’s friends, while neglecting the true stand-outs in Forrest and Camp as the hippie-ish parents.

In case you somehow missed that this is a 1980s version of Romeo and Juliet, there are a few background hints (like the names, and the movie marquee) that should subliminally implant that info. Somehow, even that simplistic plotline gets lost a few times along the way; there are a lot of side stories that don't ever pay off. Good "light punk" soundtrack and a few comical (if mostly predictable) moments.

The teenage Hollywood life movies never really do it for me, but this is probably one of the better ones. There’s some pretty good Cage moments so that kept it interesting for me. Cheesy, but fun.

With a premise that doesn't go any further than Romeo-and-Juliet-in-a-shopping-mall, Valley Girl shouldn't be remember for more than an 80s teen comedy. However, its pastels bordering on neon, its incessant needle drops, its prolonged meet-cute, its insistence that no collar be left down, and its liberal use of "like" makes it wholly entertaining. And then you have Nic Cage, who announces to the world that he is weird and will be weird with an aggressiveness that really can't be matched.

A campy 80's comedy that tries to be a lot of things, it unfortunately fails at leaving much of an impression. Cage, Foreman, & the rest of the cast deliver solid performances, but the characters are lacking in depth. The plot is muddled, with too many pointless subplots that get dropped on a dime, & the pacing is dreadfully slow. It also heavy-handedly borrows from the likes of Romeo & Juliet, which wouldn't be a problem if the comparisons weren't so blatant & in-your-face. Overall, meh.

The script is predictable but this movie has a distinct feel to it. The two leads have good chemistry and the cast make up for an average script. Overall I would recommend this film.

Decent 80s highschool movie with a very young Nic Cage. Completely okay for its time. Unfortunately Nic Cage never wears the outfit he wears on the poster.

There are so many crap teen movies of the 80s that people love I don't see why this one gets forgotten? I actually prefer it over the majority of the John Hughes oeuvre.

Far better than the typical 80's teen comedy you might expect (admittedly a low bar) which probably has alot to do w/ Coolidge in the director's chair. She not only offers up a teen film that's unusually more focused on the girl's wants, but does a great job of fleshing out a specific cultural time & space & presenting parents w/ more than 1 dimension. There are still cliches of course & the 3rd act's paint-by-numbers, but the period details (like the sndtrk) separate it from the junk.

Coolidge, who made a semi-autobiographical, semi-documentary film on rape, called _Not a Pretty Picture_, is a serious filmmaker. And one does not have to look hard to discern here a serious interest in social documentation. All this, in fact, is laid on a bit thick, and does not blend in with any very well-shaped or well-paced narrative episodes. But the problems with the narrative go deeper than mere clumsiness.
