From the demented minds that brought you last year's V/H/S comes S-VHS, an all-new anthology of dread, madness, and gore. This follow-up ventures even further down the demented path blazed by its predecessor, discovering new & terrifying territory in the genre. This is modern horror at its most inventive, subverting our expectations about viral videos in ways that are just as satisfying as they are sadistic. The result is the rarest of all tapes--a second generation with no loss of quality. (Sundance)

I'm assuming all 4 videos were originally shot digitally...so why take the time and effort to transfer them to a medium on which no one will ever see them, thus preventing the curse from spreading? And if preventing 'loss of quality' is important in maintaining curse purity and potency, digital transfer would probably be a hell of a lot more reliable than VHS. Call me again when B/L/U/R/A/Y comes out.

While the first VHS had a few segment I didn't like, I liked everything about VHS 2. Ride in the Park was pretty much a perfect zombie movie. And Safe Haven was honestly one of the most intense horror movies I've seen in years. The last couple minutes gave me a feeling of intense unease very similar to how I felt the first time I played Silent Hill as a young teenager. I also enjoyed the other two segments quite a bit, but Ride and Safe Haven were the highlights.

More of the same, the first one had a couple neat ideas for a horror movie, and this one does too, but the poorly formulated gimmick for an anthology just can't hold these purposefully badly produced little stories together.

Putting more in all departments this is a big boost on the previous. All the short stories are all of a higher quality and doesn't truly dip (or at least not as much as the previous iteration), though the frame narrative is still underwhelming. The found footage still is better than before, and ultimately is fresh in its horror delivery

Usually when you copy one VHS tape to another, you run the risk of generational loss. That doesn't seem to be the case with V/H/S/2. The second installment is a solid sequel with different stories in a similar style. If you like found footage movies or horror anthologies, it's worth a rental.

Another pretty good anthology of found footage horror tales using more or less the exact same framing device as the original, although this is a slight improvement overall. The ghost story at the beginning is instantly forgettable, but the other segments all manage to touch a nerve, especially the alien abduction one. I also now want to see a feature length zombie apocalypse flick all from the POV of a single person who gets turned early on.

While the acting might not be the best and the themes (ghosts, zombies, aliens) not original, I did not give a damn because I was enjoying myself too much. My weakness for found footage plays a big role in this, plus every segment made me startle or cackle with glee at least a few times. God, I can't get enough of this stuff. Bring on a third, please!

Up-and-down stuff, but most of it works pretty well, and this time around, the frame narrative is more cohesive. I actually think the real gem here is "Phase 1 Clinical Trials", which puts jump scares to their most effective use in years.

These anthologies are usually a case of a few interesting experimental ideas done poorly but you give them credit for trying something different. This one actually takes 4 standard types of horror and actually does them REALLY well.

More nihlistic splatter gore that just retraces the outlines drawn by the first, only with a shakier, less assured hand. Literally every person on screen dies, I think. Every one. I don't think anyone has appeared on screen and lived to see the next day in either of these things. This kind of misery just gets old really fast when there is not even a chance of hope.

The wraparound/Tape 49 (Simon Barrett) = lame. 2/5——Phase 1 Clinical Trials (Adam Winguard) = Generic, uninteresting. 2/5——A Ride in the Park (Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale) = Quick and entertaining. Cool to see the Blair Witch director/producer shooting another found-footage thing in the woods. 3/5——Safe Haven (Gareth Evans and Timjo Tjahjanto) = Hell-fucking-yeah! Best by far 5/5——Slumber Party Alien Abduction (Jason Eisner) = Mixed bag. 2.5/5 It's really just Safe Haven that's worth watching

V/H/S/2 is found footage anthology excellence (for me). It improves upon the faults of the first film and brings more gore and crazy stuff to the table. There is also some nice dark humor. The segments are all polished and if I had to pick a favourite I would with Safe Heaven. This film is just a personal favourite to me, though I understand people thinking different than me on this topic.

Some of the individual sequences are stronger but there's a lack of mystery and intrigue in the wraparounds, and the lack of thematic unity really hurts this in comparison to the original. And I mean some of these really play fast and loose with the found footage idea, which I can forgive slightly with the original but here it's just like it could have been any set of short films. Still a fun ride though, but just in general less -actually- -scary-.

Sadly not as fantastic as its predecessor. The stories felt kinda lazy and I dunno... too in-yo-face? Most of em (ESPECIALLY the Safe Haven one) would've been way scarier if you couldn't see the "monster" or whatever it is in each scenario. Because honestly? Those were terrible. Not even well done costumes, it felt anti-climatic and I really hate having a good creepy story ruined in the last two minutes. Not okay!

This isn't quite as sinister as the original, but the considerable increase in scale sees it no less bracing for the fact. Managing to fit a tad of comedy, plenty of shock factor, and lots of suspense into several short stories this way means you barely notice the time go by, and in that respect this really deserves a degree of praise.

It has exactly the same concept as the first anthology, and overall it's kind of the same, but different. There are positives and negatives to these differences. Visually it looks better, but less real. First one didn't have any standouts, but is better as a whole. This one have one great short (cultists), one damn fun (zombies), and other two, as well as main story pales in comparison.

Meh vote. While I enjoyed each of the story segments in this anthology, none of them made enough of an impression on me to remember them much after I'd finished watching. Mostly entertaining in the moment, but even at a shorter length than the first it manages to feel overlong and occasionally dull. None of the segments seem to rise above their own genre trappings, so the experience is very derivative. At least the first movie had the succubus segment - that was cool. V/H/S 2 has little that stands out to me.

The first two segments are good - Phase I Clinical Trials is short and sweet (and hey, nice tits) and Ride in the Park breathes life into the zombie film - but Safe Haven and Alien Abduction Slumber Party are so intense and nuts that by the time the movie was over, I had trouble remembering the first two. And the framing device here is far better than in the first, namely because they don't waste time on it.

Nowhere near as good at the first movie. Most of the short films were bad, and none were great. The frame narrative was boring and contrived. "Phase I Clinical Trials" was stupid with terrible dialogue and acting. "A Ride in the Park" had a fun concept, but it definitely ceased being horror and became comedy very quickly. "Safe Haven" was definitely the best, but was let down by awful CGI and practical effects. And "Slumber Party Alien Abduction" is as idiotic as it sounds, really.

VHS1 had a few segments that I found to be genuinely disturbing. Maybe it was the low budget, snuff film look to it, maybe it was how they kept the monsters in the dark if the makeup wasn't great? VHS2 decision to go HD in some instances was not a great idea. Costumes and make up look cheap when well lit, and several of the movies come off completely comical.

This film is many things. It's possibly one of the biggest improvements between a sequel and it's predecessor. It's one of the best found footage movies out there, or at least up there with Blair Witch & Man Bites Dog, and one of the first to give good reasons why the characters are recording everything. It's also one of the best horror movies I've seen in a long, long time. And last but not least: it marks the first time I've seen a full-bodied Baphomet being birthed by a human woman.

V/H/S 2 strays from what made the first one so engaging, which was found-footage presented in it's most pure form: Usually one camera, with believable setups and editing. This film succumbs to what found-footage has become, a gimmick and a selling point, rather than an actual means of drawing the viewer into the stories being told. The last short is fantastic, and an exception to the above complaints, but as a whole the movie is sadly uninspired and quite lazy.

I still found the first installment to be superior to this one, though that is not to say this film wasn't decent. The framing story is a hell of a lot creepier in this installment, and Safe Haven is by far the frontrunner of this film. Honestly, I think Safe Haven could have been its own film; in fact, it was basically like a fucked up Indonesian version of House of the Devil, the Blair Witch Project, and the Heaven's Gate movement. I would honestly just watch that short, the rest are meh.

The Gareth Evans short is obviously the best - with the zombie cyclists coming a close second...but why did 3 of the shorts involve zombies...seemed a bit of a cheap tactic, especially with Evans' short. But, it was a decent way to spend 90 minutes - not sure I could take another one of these though...they could really do something with the overarching story though - it's so loose fitting that it might as well not be there...

Why am I watching the 2nd one of these? They really could work on the overarching story that tapes (fuck you, whatever) the whole thing together. Disappointingly it's the same premise as the last, giving up on itself with lines like 'Why don't you like, keep watching those tapes?' Content-wise: 1 & 2 had great concepts but lacking scripts (esp 2). 3 made the most of the opportunity by far. Eisener brought his lighting & saturation show but has started using children lately to average effect.

While none of the entries in this omnibus are bad, it can't be denied that the last two films (Safe Haven and Slumber Party) are miles ahead of the rest. Safe Haven takes a documentary crew into the heart of a compound of an Indonesian doomsday cult, and continues to grow exponentially more crazy until you're left stunned. While Slumber Party never quite reaches that height, it takes a lot of the silly fears of aliens we used to have as a kid and reminds us what was so terrifying about UFOs.

It takes more risks--and is more generally creative--than its predecessor, which is appreciated. By the same token, though, the "oh, come on" quotient is off the charts. "Hokey" and "cheesy" were not words that could've been used to describe the first one, but they were words that came to mind often here, along with the words "holy shit are these some putridly terrible actors." Gareth Evans' segment, though--the "Safe Haven" one--is as horrifying as anything I've seen in some time.
