Fans of beautiful women who get their way & the unusual may like this. What makes it most compelling - after the young Cybil Shepherd-like lead - are the origins of the novel it's based on (1911 Germany). Not many stories suggest that morality might be genetic & most femme fatales aren't created through "evil" artificial insemination. The direction is also stellar w/ some really thoughtful interplay between imagery & content (like the lead looking through the web of a hammock at her next victim)

Brigitte Helm was amazing in Alraune (1928) (not to be confused with the 1930 sound adaptation which wasn't very good, in which she also starred), and Hildegard Knef almost manages to match her in the 1952 remake! This was shot beautifully. Had it not been for that long stretch in the middle there that was a little too plain, this would have been a truly great version.
