Having JCVD play a character that can't emote? That's pretty smart. The rest of this movie? Not so much.

Wow, this has dated horribly. The premise is solid as is the idea of casting acting duds like Van Damme and Lundgren as silent killing machines. Unfortunately, Lundgren gets to speak more towards the end, hamming it up as if there were no tomorrow. Van Damme settles for blandness throughout, the butt of many of Emmerich's ridiculous attempts at humour. Another major problem is Ally Walker's intolerable (and almost unbearably 90s) character.

JCVD does Terminator 2 with maximum 90s Hollywood cheese, cyberpunk tropes, and hard-R violence. How could I not enjoy it? Another great movie watching experience with friends.

Emmerich once again doing Michael Bay better than Michael Bay: a silly and featherweight TERMINATOR knock-off (with a few uncomfortable preening moments for its "hunk" stars) but if you're susceptible to this sort of thing, it's a fun ride with Van-Damme and Lundgren no threat to Arnie, but still satisfying the requirements of the genre. Possibly goes on one scene too long (and is a "soldier" ever *really* dead?) but still fun.

Interesting setup and okay mindless action. Lundgren's indiscriminate killings were always a shock. JCVD actually delivers better lines than Dolph. Fav scene: Ally Walker throwing back live grenades while handcuffed on a moving bus.

There are entertaining action moments to be had but the writing isn't good enough to make most of them meaningful and even though Lundgren and JCVD's acting is mitigated by the nature of their roles it still holds the film back. I can see how this could be fun for people, but there's just too much to overlook for me to be satisfied.

Loved this as a kid, but time has not been kind. But it's not all bad. Pre-Independence Day Emmerich delivers a film with some nice set-pieces and humour. JCVD is as terrible as ever, while Lundgren hams his way through every scene. One of the better JCVD films and certainly the best thing Emmerich has ever done.

A pretty good movie about the dangers of covering up and forgetting our own war crimes, instead of remembering and making up for them. Also, undead mentally programmed super soldier is the most fitting role ever for JCVD's low affect delivery. And Lundgren is fantastic at playing psycho.

Top badass moment? The UniSol Truck is pretty badass. It's big, bad, green and belches out dry ice every time it stops and someone gets out of it. All it needed adding to it was a few machine guns and missile launchers. Considering the Universal Solider programme's meant to be top secret, it's the most unsubtle lorry I've seen since the F.L.A.G. Mobile Unit semi in "Knight Rider". No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

It used to be much better 15 years ago. Sometimes I miss the way I used to appreciate movies. Now all I see in this film is bad direction, bad acting, bad story. Some lines of dialog made me laugh, but it ain't too much fun.

Perhaps the best movie by Emmerich...? Good, unclean fun and the power of the gaze demonstrated one, two, sevenhundredandninetyfive times with Van Damme skulking at Lundgren, Lundgren skulking back and so on and so forth. Oh, and they blow stuff up. And shoot people. In ridiculous ways, obviously.

I guess I'm going to have to go against the grain here and say I found it somewhat enjoyable. I thought the concept was decent enough but it certainly could've been done better. I suppose it says a lot about a movie when saying "it's alright" is being rebellious due to so many people saying it's awful.

I recall that around the time this movie was released people I knew claimed that Dolph Lundgren's brother worked at a video store in St Kilda. I gave the rumours little credence at the time, even though Dolph himself, as we know and as should always be remembered, has a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Sydney University (and was subsequently awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, which he did not take up due to having become romantically involved with Grace Jones), so I guess anything's possible.

With JCVD and Dolph Lundgren playing two robotic humans, with the first fleeing together with a woman from the later this really is just poor Terminator 2 clone. The casting of Jean-Claude and Dolph as unemotional beings is a smart move. Still it has some entertainment value, especially thanks to a nice sadistic Lundgren, to keep this from being a complete waste of time.

Cheesy and campy 90s action romp with enjoyable performances that plays exceptionally well into the talents of Ralf Möller. The entire UniSol project was doomed to fail from the start since no one is able to fire their massive guns at targets below or above them.

Smart decision to cast Van Damme and Lundgren (like Schwarzenegger before them) in roles that require minimal mastery of affect display. Every other decision made here is incredibly stupid, however. Seemingly made entirely of cliches, the jumps between scenes become more absurd the longer the film runs.

Universal Soldier is one of the few Roland Emmerich films that I have something of a soft spot for and as a kid I watched it many times. And that is purely because of the novelty of both Jean-Claude Van Damme & Dolph Lundgren together in the same film. And between them, comparing this alongside their respective back catalogues, this is by no means either of their worst work. There are a handful of enjoyable set pieces, but ultimately I have always thought of this film as a poor man's Terminator.

It's the story of two Vietnam fatalities (Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren) resurrected as super-soldiers by the military, who 25 years later revert back to their rivalry when a reporter's (Ally Walker) snooping triggers the return of their memories. A bloody, explody chase across the Southwest ensues.

that they took this premise and turned it into a rollicking action-adventure, narratively, and a vietnam guilt trip, thematically, is unbelievably lame. however, in typical emmerich fashion, that it is so silly - corny comedy and all! - makes it relatively inoffensive, the worst things being typical meaningless violence orgies and its hilarious anti-smoking turn. very, very stupid though, and the only reason i watched this was for john hyams. though that probably wasn't necessary. whatever.

This is a contender for the best film of Roland Emmerich's career. That says more about Emmerich than anything else. On the bland side as far as 90s action is concerned. Ally Walker shows off what she learned at the Nicolas Cage School of Acting.

For a Robocop/Terminator knockoff I found myself surprised that it explored PTSD and the human cost of the Vietnam War. In a way, it almost feels like Emmerich's warm-up for his Americanization of Godzilla, with Vietnam taking the place of the atomic bomb and aging action heroes taking place of a giant monster. I just wish it had better set-pieces and didn't have an insufferably annoying, superfluous female lead.

As far as JCVD or Dolph Lundgren movies go, this isn't bad. Of course, the story is pretty weak, the acting is wooden, and the dialogue is poorly written, but beyond that, it's not terrible.

Van Damme and Lundgren, admittedly no Gielgud and Olivier, are well matched in this sci-fi/action/horror thriller. The guys look good (male nudity fans will like the cryogenics scene) and Emmerich (_Independence Day_) gives this some much-needed energy and humor, but in the end it's all too standard a Hollywood product ever to be as interesting as it could have been.

Emmerich has sloped down to a whole new low after Independence Day. Not only is he constantly in rotation to make crappy movies, but he hasn't even had a good one. Well, at least Roland gave Damme a good role as a heartless, cold man of steel so he wouldn't have to try to act.
