Doesn't seem like much at first, but develops into a tight, tense film noir. There's a thick level of brutality here, including a blind girl getting slapped around and what is likely the only instance of someone getting killed by a bull stampede in a noir. The climax involves a beautifully photographed and perfectly crafted chase, and there's a lot of other great scenes. Nice performances from all. The Holden/Olson relationship could've developed more naturally, but it works well enough.

An exciting film about a train station stakeout and a kidnapping. Holden and Olson are cute together, and Barry Fitzgerald is good this time, keeping the brogue somewhat under control.

While not always thrilling, it's rather direct approach made more for a often raw feeling and that's what made Union Station (1950) so engaging.

William Holden makes it all work his skill makes the other actors and the script seem credible. Not a classic, but worth watching.

Ano de centenário de William Holden filme #7. Seria um noir dos mais eletrizantes com o bônus daquele sorriso irresistível do Holden no final se a experiência não fosse conspurcada por aquele retrato da deficiente visual como histérica e incapaz. BlurayRip MakingOff.

This is an interesting drama that has a few really interesting and original scenes. There are a couple of scenes that drag on in this film. The cast does a good job and for the most part the script is interesting. I would recommend this film.

Holden's character is a no nonsense train station detective and it's just a great pleasure to see him go about his business, crafting plans and executing them just to get the kidnapper. His intro scene is wonderful in every way. The kidnapping plot itself is kind of weak, but it doesn't matter much. The villains give us some good scenes, Fitzgerald helps lighten the mood a bit, and Olson is very enjoyable as the surprisingly streetsmart witness, but it's Holden's show and he's wonderful.

The story isn't much more than a straightforward police procedural, but the terrific central location and all the hard-boiled noir archetypes make it more interesting than it ought to be. The (almost) real-time nature of the investigation lends the film a sense of urgency and tension that rarely drops off, and the sporadic bouts of violence peppered throughout (from both sides of the law) are fairly shocking even by modern standards.

Good but a few potholes keep it from being excellent.
