Seems to be considered one of the lesser Preston Sturges films, but so far it's my favorite. Rex Harrison and Linda Darnell are both dynamite, and the movie is really funny throughout, especially the contrast between fantasy and reality. On top of that, the music is excellent and it's got quite a sweet ending.

This film took a while to get going, but once it did, it was pretty entertaining. The dialogue was great and Rex Harrison was fantastic. Near the end, there was some slapstick that really didn't work though. It was rather awkward. Anyway, it was some easy, fun entertainment that I enjoyed watching.

lmfao. [edit: Watching this after reading Dworkin's "Intercourse," this movie could be perfect material for a pretty interesting radical feminist analysis, or it might even be fair to interpret it as a radfem text in itself (at least using a neat trick called "the death of the author")-- almost makes this a richer film, although I have to wonder what the intentions were].

Sturges's patented pungent dialogue is in place and it's a thrill to watch Rex Harrison deliver it with rapidly articulate diction that makes every line another devastating swing with a well-sharpened rapier. There's also an especially nice supporting turn by Barbara Lawrence, who continually deflates her stuffy dullard of a husband with sardonic precision. There are wonderful intricacies in the plotting and in the details. Sturges brings some of that care to his visual senses, as well.

That's exactly how the mind of a cheated man works! Preston Sturges delivers a brilliant and absurd comedy with Rex Harrison having one of his most excellent comic roles of his career! The jealousy comes together in the most ridiculous slapstick and I was laughing at it all the way!

wasn't expecting a sturges to feel like one of hitch's more impishly macabre films at times. can be a little stuffy but it works.

Rex Harrison does physical comedy so well, and the symphonic soundtrack is brilliant.

Daft as hell (i.e. great). The slapstick is perfectly fine, but some of the foley effects are terribly over the top; who knew that white bread was a musical instrument?

Charming psychological study, full of good dialogue and works in the music well. Fast-paced, too, and I thought the slapstick was very good, for slapstick.

Cleverly done (apart from the tedious slapstick part, although i've come to expect as much from Sturges), with an interesting formal structure, and it sure is cynical, but for the most part i found it more oddly amusing than actually outright funny.

Excellent stuff. Has the razor sharp dialogue and madcap comic sensibility you expect from Sturges, and also strong tinges of dark comedy and a furiously erudite Rex Harrison at his best. Sturges also experiments with structure, a large chunk of the film consisting of elaborate fantasy sequences scored by different classical pieces. Just screwball comedy at its creative finest.

Overplays its screwball side a little too much, but when it hits the right dark spot, it hits it incredibly well.

Rex Harrison is asked to wear a lot of hats in this movie and does so quite well. Very dark and very fun.

Leaving aside the small bits of broad comedy, this is probably my favorite of Sturges so far. The writing and cinematography are well above par. Unfortunately, Rex Harrison does extremely little for me....I kind of want to punch his stupid face in.

Classical music, murder, intrigue, trysts.. No wonder people like opera. I think I'm starting to like Preston Sturges

I don't know that it's quite Hitchcock-does-comedy, but it's pretty close. A great dark comedy about a conductor who's been cheated on and his dastardly plans for revenge. The dialogue is bitingly funny ("no one handles Handel like you handle Handel"). Other than a seemingly out-of-place slapstick sequence from such a fastidious ego, this hit all the right notes for me.

Has all the energy and wit you'd expect from Sturges, only with darker themes. It didn't bust my gut, but it's very amusing and the dialogue is basically perfect. "I seriously doubt you used to play Russian Roulette all the time with your father!"

DVD OP.

A very dark comedy that plays out very well. The performances are great and the central daydreams work really well at conveying the different aspects of love. The ending is very nicely executed.

Very entertaining. The idea is brilliant and so is the dialogue and the delivery, as one would expect from Sturges. The slapstick is useless, though, but nevermind that.

Very enjoyable, albeit dark, comedy from Sturges. As far as the actors go, Harrison is the key cog here, and he performs his role of the suspicious gentleman extremely well. The dialogue is filled with subtle comic moments that fly by almost quicker than you can catch them, and the centerpiece sequence as Harrison's character attempts to deal with his wife is wonderfully suspenseful and laugh out loud funny.

Darker than I had expected from a 40s film, but in a good way. Funny & witty, with sharp dialogue and a great performance from Rex Harrison.

Love the fantasy sequences, and the satire of the egotistical artist is very funny. Also love the music. Great dialogue and verbal comedy, but the slapstick falls flat.
