While it was a largely superficial nod to Lovecraft, "Underwater" is still better than every real adaptation yet committed to film. This might be a blatant rip off of Alien, right down to Stewart's shaved head, and she certainly doesn't hold a candle to Weaver, but the truth is that this movie was a hell of a fun ride for me, but judging by the largely negative reviews, results may vary.

Look, I wouldn't recommend this if I weren't a slut for Alien, Kristen Stewart, girls with short hair, 90-minute genre films, or the unexplored ocean. However I think all of those things are fucking rad so yeah sure go see it.

Underwater shows promise at the start but quickly sinks into tedium as the film progresses. The aesthetic is grimy and dark, which is understandable given the low budget (I'm assuming), but it fails to build the atmosphere. The film undeniably takes inspiration from Alien and perhaps a bit from the trailer to 2014's Godzilla, but is far less interesting. There is no exploration of the mystery, just badly written character drama. Stewart and the cast are alright, just not given much to work with.

Points off for the characters, dialogue, jokes, perfectly-preserved dead kid trading card with all of the pertinent pieces of an earlier conversation prominently displayed so that the audience can absorb it in one instant and "oh...aww..." in the next. But gets points for most memorably aping ALIEN in the way that most matters: Sigourney Weaver's iconic panties. I bet you're real sorry about overusing that word now, aren't ya? Iconic. Paaaanties. Iconic. Paaaanties. Sleeeeep now. Sleeeeeeeeeeeee

Movies like this shoud exist. There's nothing wrong with competant, yet fleeting, entertainment. It would be nice if more of them met Underwater's level of imagination and passion, two things which clearly make their presence known even if they don't surface Underwater into some sort of memorable or cult-y territory.

The film combines Aliens and Cthulhu quite well. The POV shots of the characters walking out into the unknown are unnerving as shit. This is how you do jump scares. Even a little bitty fish swimming by the camera will make my pee pee turn inside out. I'm not sure if Kristen Stewart running around in her underwear was supposed to be an anti "Male Gaze" statement or not, but you got me Kristen. You fucking got me. I stared at your legs and I was all in. Sue me. Or cancel me. I don't give a fuck.

Better than its reputation, and honestly it has more in common with Gravity than with Alien. Sure it doesn't live up to either of those, and sure it could have done a lot more with the Lovecraft connection, but it's still a competent, entertaining thriller. Not really more than that, but no less either.

I am a sucker for sci-fi, and this is Alien meets Lovecraft. Except there is no lore, the characters are thin, the plot is formulaic, the underwater action is visually indecipherable, the acting is stale, the tension is sometimes laughable, and the fun is infrequent. It isn't bad, but there is so much potential, and it's largely squandered.

Underwater really isn’t bad, it’s just perfectly average. The setting is great for horror, but the characters are underdeveloped, it’s hard to tell who is who in those bulky suits, and the deaths are extremely similar. I’ll give credit that I was way off on who was surviving and dying next, but again, the characters were underdeveloped. Also not my favorite score from Beltrami, who I love otherwise, but it’s not bad either. It passes the time, but I can’t recommend renting it.

I don't like Kristen Stewart, but she was good in this. So was the rest of the cast, with the exception of the annoying T.J. Miller. The acting, the set design and the lore behind the creatures carry the movie, despite not building up the creepiness and the mythology. But it has to be said: this should have been so much better, with that much potential.

This is a respectable sci-fi film. Its full of cliches but I feel like the actors gave it their best shot. Kristen Stewart gave it her best. This director should try to make a Bioshock movie once he hires better writers. (Is it me or was the vocal audio a little to low?)

i LOVED this film. it hits all the points for me, scary underwater film with a cool creature that was a bit surprising and lots of gore and crazy explosions. however, Kristen Stewart did NOTHING for this film... but she didn't negatively impact the film either. Can they just stop using her as an actress period? her face sucks and she's an emotionless stick.

This was a flawed but fun ride. Kristen Stewart was passable but still can't emote to save her life and her single facial expression gets annoying after a while. There's also a bit too many close ups where I couldn't tell what was going on. The characters were decent and rather balanced even if they aren't given much depth or development. I liked it but I'll have to rewatch it to know if this will join the ranks of underwater creature features I keep in rotation.

There should be more of these like the glory days of Leviathan and Deepstar Six giving way to Deep Rising and Deep Blue Sea. Since the only other movie featuring people forced to ocean bottom walk to an underwater sea base happened to be The Meg 2 which wasn't as fun as I wanted it to be, I'll take all the underwater movies I can get. Unless you read my next couple of reviews.

Suprisingly not nearly as trashy as expected. I especially liked the fact that - unlike in most other films of this kind - no one made idiotic decisions and all the protagonists worked together. Still just a monster movie, but better than Prometheus ;)

Props and extra points for working in a very difficult production environment. I was enjoying this movie until they rolled out the stupid sea monster. Then I started to lose interest. Why did they have to Hollywood it up like that? A really good movie could have been made. Overall worthwhile, but falls far short of its potential.

Biased Score - 90% | Unbiased Score - 68%, I saw this movie incredibly blind. I knew nothing about it, and that's honestly the best way to see it - because the tension constantly builds and the mystery is real. The most interesting thing about this film is that it feels like a space thriller, like Alien or something - where the base is like a space port, the water suits are like a space suit, and the deep dark abyss of the water is basically outer space. Honestly, I had a blast.

I'm all for this disaster, Lovecraftian, creature, survival horror disguised as a disposable Alien ripoff. K-Stew saving the couple by putting them in pods and then exploding the bottom of the ocean -- and the giant creature and the "tiny" creatures all along -- is all we need to face coronavirus in this quarantine.

Massively underrated film that does so many things right, from its setting to the basic arc. Kristen is good as are most of the other characters. Setting is dripping with atmosphere and the various challenges are put together nicely. I'd have preferred to see a bit more before the action begins and a fraction more backstory for some characters.

i'm gonna cut this one some slack, because it's obviously a low-shelf production, but *most of the time* it holds itself ok. it doesn't go too deep in its lore, though it doesn't bring anything new to table neither. stewart is okay, i guess, though she's no sigourney weaver, william eubank is no ridley scott. meh all around, forgettable experience.

This is a fairly average sci-fi horror type films. A little cheesy and quite reminiscent of 'Alien' and other such films at times but without the truly stand out, memorable moments. I'm not especially keen on Kristen Stewart either (if I thought anyone's performance was decent, it'd probably be Vincent Cassel) but I suppose she's ok. This is very much an ok watch - it's not especially dire I guess but its certainly not particularly good, so overall I wouldn't especially recommend this, no.

I didn't know what to expect with this, beyond seeing its low rating and it being labelled an 'Alien' rip off. I'm not sure that's a fair criticism given that it... well... isn't. There's one scene near the start that feels like a very on-the-nose homage to the initial face-hugger incident in the original 'Alien', but beyond that the similarities are no more than what's been done in a ton of other sci-fi/disaster horrors - I.e. There is a danger, and the danger picks people off one by one.

This movie takes elements from The Abyss or Alien and creates a good concept but then drops the ball. Kristen Stewart carries and she ranges from good to cringey. Most of the cringe is from the poor writing. There are lines so awkward that she delivers and I honestly don’t know how she kept a straight face. D

Lean horror sci-fi doesn't waste a minute, keeping its audience on edge from the opening scene onwards; though it can't shake the memories of more distinctive genre entries (ALIEN gets a run, mixed with THE DESCENT and any other garden variety survival movie), it's a good fun popcorn film, elevated by the always ambiguous Cassel, and a Weaveresque portrait of grit and determination from a spell-binding Stewart. A murky mid-section, and a few extraneous characters, are minor missteps.

Unwatchable. The scenes was so dark, you barely could understand what was going on. And the monster. Oh my god the monster. Ridiculous! I believe the directors who want to shoot deep sea movies must take at first, intensive seminars from James Cameron (see Abyss) and how he build a marver 30 years ago!

I see all the potential for this to have been an amazing Lovecraftian experience wasted on a standard survival story that adds Cthulhu in as some kind of effortless way of adding lore. Pretty solid movie for the most part. I think the biggest problem with it is that they can use the water to be an excuse for the story to move very slowly, and so there isn't a LOT there, but I think the characters and suspense do make up for it, and the ending is pretty awesome.

Arguably one of the most half-assed sci-fi films ever made. If you're going to create such a grandiose, far-fetched premise and setting, which I was completely on board for, do a bit of research. Yes, it's derivative schlock with nary an original or otherwise elevated idea to consider, but I appreciate its commitment to being lean, the cool tech design, and that much of the horror is built upon sheer stress, which is to say that it's a nightmare for claustrophobes with a fear of deep water. And as always, Kristen Stewart is utterly captivating as the antithesis of Hollywood leading ladies, even if this character is little else than Ripley reincarnated.

There's no time for characterization, or conflict or dramatic structure, any of the stuff they teach in screenwriting 101; there's hardly even time to think as this stripped down thrill machine careens from one taut survival sequence to another with a minimum of fuss, blather or explanation. Traveling light has its advantages: Underwater is good enough moment to moment and over before you even notice that nothing adds up to much.

very hokey and rushed "remake" of Alien, but down undah. All the usual let-downs of conventional commercial filmmaking (bland character-less characters, formulaic story, awful comic relief) are present, but the concept here taps into the horrors of the underwater deep just a little bit, with the scary moments work because of their great build-up (and 'whatever' jump-scares) -- could've gone deeper with the mysteriousness of the watery depths and corporate conspiracies.
