Estreava há 50 anos na França. Nem sempre gosto do Giovanni como diretor, mas este aqui é um filmaço, totalmente anti pena capital que ainda existia na França, Giovanni foi colaborador durante a ocupação nazista e ficou marcado por muitos anos pelo seu passado nazi (a bem da verdade foi bem feito, rá!), obviamente ele construiu uma estória com um protagonista bem mais simpático do que a sua própria e foi só sucesso, mesmo que o papel fique a cargo do também fascista Alain Delon. *Mild spoilers* Intriguing, low-key drama has echoes of LES MISERABLES to it, except Javert emerges somewhat triumphant! Well performed by all, with Gabin's seen-it-all veteran standing out; Delon's reformed criminal is not fleshed out to the same extent, so it's harder to identify and sympathise with him, though the gloomy climactic moments do pack a considerable emotional punch.

AMAZING film about the French justice system and men of two perspectives doing their best to reform themselves and others, against the stark ugliness inherent in the machine.
