This low key, insightful, and ultimately devastating film quietly observes a callow young man in his search for love. Utterly ill-equipped for the challenge, he bounces from one encounter to another, hoping that he'll find the connection to life that's missing in his life, but instead, he causes pain wherever he goes in his self-absorbed quest. When he finally utters the words "I love you" they are hollow and come immediately after his admission of dishonesty, manipulation and deception. (imdb)

the earliest hong i've seen, and it's remarkable how fully formed his obsessive schtick already was. doubling of characters and story beats, toxic males, the incorporation/mirroring of an external text, formal impositions onto the narrative, alcohol-fuelled confrontations, actors playing actors, awkward stilted dialogues, poetry, rohmerian moralising over the actions of flawed, fickle characters--only the zooms are missing. one of his harsher films, about a snake learning(?) to become human.

Another small movie with the bane of lots of long takes. I know they save struggling filmmakers lots of time and money; unfortunately, movies are a visual medium, and all those five- to ten-minute shots are almost as boring as movies shot on videotape. It doesn't help that this movie is mainly blah conversations between uninteresting people, and that the protag in particular is a real fuckhead; I suppose that was part of the point, but who wants to follow THAT guy around for two hours?

Pretty much the platonic ideal of a Hong Sang-soo film. 'Even though it's difficult to be a human being, let's not turn into monsters.'

A touch too light in its subject matter which makes the movie rather easy to forget.

"Hong San-soo's comic rendezvous Turning Gate is built on a series of repetitions that mirror the South Korean director's fascination with reincarnation." - Ed Gonzalez

The protagonist is a combination of narcissistic and also fatalistic in his personal self loathing. It's ultimately just about a man who can't seem to develop meaningful personal connections with people. The story itself is crafted after a Korean/Chinese parable about seeking love that was never deserved. Well shot and acted with a natural grace to it but it's still your standard depressing Korean drama packaged better than most.
