Before he ever got a direct a movie on his own Akira Kurosawa worked as a writer for World War II propaganda movies like this one. To its credit it's not in-your-face as most of the other pro-Japan war films, and the whole thing is rooted strong in a actual story that doesn't feel tacked on just for the sake Japan's war moral. It's actually a good movie Satsuo Yamamoto directs of Kurosawa and Bonhei Sotoyama script. But naturally, its spirit lays in war.
