Certainly it's a masterpiece of impressive spectacle and cinematography. As effective propoganda, I'm sure it's unparalled. There's actually not much of substance at all; most of the speeches are abstractions about loyalty and pride and strength. Specifics are strictly avoided. Overall it's an impressive work on Riefenstahl's part, although it does get tedious after a while. Then again, I'm watching at home on my couch, not on a big screen in a theater full of fanatical Germans.

From a film making point of view this film is nothing short of sheer genius. Absolutely amazing cinematography. The massive German army demonstrations are so impressive that this truly allows you to see how the entire country was rallied behind Hitler and his so called "national pride". However, this is also absolutely terrifying to see such might when you know the terrible destruction and inhuman war crimes that would soon come to pass.

On an objective scale, this is an absolutely brilliant documentary. Not overly polished, but rather powerful in editing and composition as if shot on the fly. Thankfully, the techniques Leni introduced have become staples of documentary filmmaking - much of which utilized to expose the evils of fascism.

not just evil but boring. the technicals are good but overrated, and watching half an hour of parades isn't my idea of fun. apparently loved by critics all around the world who love to exclaim "it may be offensive, but it's just *so* artistic"!

I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to take away from this, since it's not a look from the outside world at the Nazis, or propaganda from the Nazis to the outside world. This is a movie about Nazis for Nazis, which means that the approximate hour and a half of fanfare just drags. I guess what I gathered was that Leni Riefenstahl is a cinematographic genius, and that real life Hitler is as equally horrifying as fictional caricatures of him.

Really, I could have given this film any score and been fine with it. The message of the film is, of course deplorable, and the presentation is a bit dated, with some of the marches going on way too long. Still, as an examination of the power of propaganda it's amazing, both as a stand alone piece, looking at the way Riefenstahl uses images to entrance the viewer, and in the context of what it ended up being.

Remarkable cinematography. Some of the wide shots of soldiers marching in formation are really impressive. But aside from that rather boring since its basically just Hitler, marching soldiers and speeches about Hitler, marching soldiers and how great Germany is. Get some knowledge about what happend historically before watching it.

It's hard for me to rate this, seeing as though it's two things - a groundbreaking film for its genre, and propaganda film for the Nazi party. On one hand, if we can rationalize that this film was made prior to all of the atrocities that occurred, we might be able to view it in a fairer light. But we all know you can't turn a blind eye on history. Every single point of my score was awarded for cinematography alone.

A hard film to both watch and rate. The cinematography is great considering the time it was shot and it is a great look at the impact of propaganda. While it has value in the sense of history and watching select scenes can be interesting, the film as a whole really drags. Most every scene is too long and most scenes are pretty repetitive of each other. It's like being forced to watch incredibly long home movies of people, you just get to see how self-absorbed they are.

While its value as a historical document is undeniable, this is ultimately a pretty tedious affair. The camerawork providing a beautiful (and oddly poignant) look at pre-war Nuremberg is the highlight; leaving aside their chilling grotesquerie, the scenes involving Hitler and his troops (marching and otherwise) are repetitive and unenlightening. Perhaps the lesson here is that the best propaganda doesn't hope to convert the unreachable, but merely serves to agitate and strengthen the 'base'.

Very difficult to sit through, and not just because of the propaganda. The camerawork, cinematography and editing are far better in Riefenstahl's later work Olympia, and, much like a 2-hour documentary on the Republican National Convention, the content matter itself is very tedious and boring. It's certainly fascinating from a historical perspective though: even after taking multiple University courses on 20th century European History, there were still new things I took away from this.

How those nazis could carry a straight face through all these mass shenanigans is beyond me. I mean, talk about lack of self-irony. 55.000 men with spades doing some kind of musical act cheering "We plant trees!". But then, two hours of this gets kind of tiresome.

omg, Hitler is such a dork! He reminds me of Steve Jobs at one of his Apple events. Seriously, though, not only is this Zack Snyder's finest work so far, but Charlie Chaplin has never been better. By the way, we all know from film class that this documentary laid the groundwork for political campaign advertising as we now know it, but did you know it was also the inspiration for "Maid in Manhattan"? True story.

Obviously this can only be viewed in its historical context and as a female director in the 1930's it is a truimph for Leni Riefenstahl but I found it tedious. Probably should have watched the version with the commenatry.

Breathtaking and unbelievable... Riefenstahl was a great filmmaker, but sadly she is mostly remembered for being Hitlers director instead of a great creative and passionate movie maker. The scenes from the Nazi parade are amazing, and she captures Hitler as the magnificent speaker as he was. This film is obligatory for anyone who has the slightest interest in WWII...

Riefenstahl was a master of cinematography. She quite simply does not receive enough credit for what she did with the medium. Those who don't see the revolutionary filming techniques pioneered in this political showcase need to look at it from a dissociated perspective and imagine themselves as an early 20th century European not used to constant visual media saturation.

While an interesting historical document, especially since it cements the aesthetic of fascism - mass movement, obsession with national and militaristic symbols, curiously shirtless male bodies - as an actual film to find it has merit is to in a sense agree with some aspects of it. Because it is all speeches - which are preaching to the choir - and endless marches. It's a bad movie, about horrible people, which effectively captures what those people are about.

An important movie historically, and chilling to see, and objectively very well done technically (though not as remarkable as I'd been led to believe) and as a piece of propaganda, at least to the already initiated. I've given it a rating kind of in the middle, though, because it's just impossible to separate it from what it is. It's a bit boring at times, too.

Historically significant for sure, but is it really all that good? I mean, I can't imagine that many people watching this today being blown away at what is essentially two hours of Nazi and Hitler praising. It probably was cutting-edge back then, but I found it pretty tedious to watch. I understand it influencing the media and our perception, but other than being a one time watch or for a history project, it's a time capsule film that's not very appealing as a Documentary.

How do you rank something like this? It's a visual marvel, but it's also propaganda for one of the most evil regimes in history. I think it's best to look at it as a historical document, a window into how the Nazis viewed themselves. And it's certainly a technical masterpiece. A bit too long though, and very repetitive to the point of being boring.

Difficult to deny the impact of the Nazi movement. Here Leni Riefenstahl brings us right in the middle of it all! She sucks up the magnetism of the Nazis. Watching a film like this makes it easy to understand why people fell for the illusion. This gave them a sense of being apart of something great. And Riefenstahl's striking camera work was a strong part in creating the legend. Riefenstahl the director captured the magic of Hitler the actor.

tricky rating a film where a lot of it (the first 3/4?) blew chunks, and the remaining quarter provided a real aesthetic kick in the pants, harnessing the frightening magnintude of the gargantuan rallies, featuring that vertiginous elevator shot LR pulls off. I wouldn't in the least bit be surprised if a young Kubrick - had he seen this - would be TOTALLY influenced by LR's fetish for symmetry, centering the composition in a lot of those shots of the Nuremberg rally.

My customary score for a film that is brilliant in technique but repugnant in content (see Birth of a Nation). I think it speaks volumes to the legitimacy of documentary film-making that two of its greatest early examples (this, and Nanook) were essentially re-staged for the benefit of the camera. It's impossible to truly trust what you see as an objective account of events. This particular film drags in the extreme... even in class we generously applied the fast forward button. See it once.

I'm not a nazi, obviously, but this is an impressing documentary. It's some kind of mass lobotomy. I'm not sure, but I think Buñuel edited this version we got nowadays.
