Attractive desert war of the minimalistic kind. Apparently Hollywood remade this Soviet movie as Sahara (1943) with Humphrey Bogart, but at this point I haven't gotten around to seeing that one, so all I can do is judge the story on the Russian one. I did feel it was a little slow and quiet. On the other hand that was partly why it became so alluring, creating a very intimate and hopeless feeling out there in the middle of nowhere.
