In 1933, Treno popolare is the debut of a twenty-three-year-old who explodes every propagandist prescription because he has seen and assimilated the expressionist lyricism of Menschen am Sonntag, because he breathes with joy the avant-garde, because he has a sense of "realist" mise-en-scène which surely anticipates noisy August Sundays, but also the desolate sweetness of a Partie de Campagne. This is such an delightful Italian comedy. Only an hour long but keeps up with a group of travelers on the Treno popolare train from Roma to Orvieto for a relaxing day trip. Nicely illustrated ordinary life and we follow a couple that work together who meet a handsome guy the girl falls for and her friend becomes the third wheel. And it's such a sweet story....

Tourist Train is centered around two unrelated couples who have arrived in the sun-bathed Etruscan/Medieval town of Orvieto on a tourist train for their vacation. It then paints a picture of their relationships in skilled impressionistic brush-strokes, with spots of humor. Couple this with the one-hour running length and you've basically got the Italian "A Day in the Country". One wonders if Renoir had watched Matarazzo's gorgeous little film.
