Joan Bennett transforms herself from a blond to a brunette and in the process changes the course of her career. Trade Winds (1938) shows brilliance, but it shows equal amount of inability. So much of the staging looks amateurish. Or perhaps what they're going for is playfulness and in the process ruin a lot of the illusion. Apart from the leads Ann Sothern puts on a wonderful drunken performance and Ralph Bellamy is a real discovery as the offbeat sidekick!
