Former monk Juvenal (Skeet Ulrich) returns to Los Angeles after many years away and begins work at a rehab center, where he discovers stigmata on his palms and a miraculous gift for healing. As word gets out, con man Bill Hill (Christopher Walken) sends his accomplice, Lynn Faulkner (Bridget Fonda), to infiltrate Juvenal's world and find out whether he's the real deal. Of course, she falls for him. This comedy is based on a novel by Elmore Leonard.

The performances are weak across the board, even from great actors. A lot of that comes from the clunky dialogue, but it also seems like everyone was directed to give "comedic" performances... except there are like no jokes in the script, at least not any funny ones. It's as if Schrader was expecting the cast to somehow make normal dialogue funny through their delivery alone, and it's exactly as awkward as that sounds. Even the Schrader fans should skip this one

Supposedly a satire of American religious hypocrisy, Touch never really finds its tonal centre, and scenes that should tap into absurdist humour are given an overly dour treatment due to Schrader's inability to be funny. Skeet Ulrich is bland in the lead, especially when he isn't blatantly imitating Depp, and Fonda is dull too. Walken and Arnold are entertaining to watch because their characters are closer to the spirit of the material, which Schrader completely misinterprets.
