I don't understand why people applaud Dustin Hoffman's performance so much. He's good the little bit that he's actually in it, but Bea Arthur as Tootsie is phenomenal!

I really despise this entire comic premise. I can forgive the fact that in superhero movies, perfectly intelligent people don't recognize their own friends and lovers in costume; I might be able to forgive comedies that do the same thing with cross-dressing except that they're usually completely unfunny. Arrested Development nailed it by having everyone know the entire time, and be disturbed.

Cross-dressing comedy predates cinema itself, but before Tootsie it wasn't done much (Some Like It Hot comes to mind and a few silent era shorts and WB cartoons). After Tootsie it was done to death, but never as elegantly, and never with a cast like this. Surely one of Hoffman's most impressive roles.

Definitely 80's with an atrocious soundtrack actually costing it some points, but pretty groundbreaking and handles the material with some tact (non constant genetilia malfunctions etc.). Hoffman is excellent, Murray is hilarious (although not used enough) and Lange is strangely sexy.

It had been a long time since we had such an uproarious comedy and such a wonderful, poignant drama. Hoffman's portrayal is no in-drag impersonation but a subtle, well-conceived comedy coup. Gelbart, Schisgal, and an uncredited Elaine May have penned a yarn that is tasteful, insightful, and hilarious.

I feel like it’s deserving of its legacy and reputation. It’s miracle it was greenlit and an even bigger miracle that it’s actually a great movie. Nothing felt done in poor taste or felt misogynistic. It’s a surprisingly compelling, clever movie, with some truly outstanding work from Hoffman and a really solid supporting cast. It’s not a laugh-a-minute movie, but there are enough laughs, and the satire is quite humorous. Some pacing issues and a dated score aside, this is a great time.

The film is totally obsessed with his pretty creepy obsession with Jessica Lange. It's not even that I think you couldn't have had this angle in the movie, but as it actually plays out, boy gets girl without ever really having to reckon with how terrible some of his choices were. I really wanted to know how Geena Davis felt about him having been a man all along.

I didn't find this to be particularly funny, amusing, clever, entertaining, satirical, artistic, or edifying. It really just is and doesn't do much with that. Feels like I'm watching an episode of some sit-com extended to two hours.

The premise of Tootsie has aged horribly. "Women need to be strong to stand up to men! Let's get a man, dress him up as woman, and show them how to do it!" That being said, there are several very funny moments and this supporting cast is legendary. How Lange won an Oscar over Garr is a tragedy.

I love movies that capture my interest in the opening salvo. This didn't. I waited for more minutes. Still it failed. I simply kept on watching because I heard some good reviews of it. Else, I could have flipped over and snored. The movie only came to life when the man became the woman Tootsie. But much time was already lost. Nonetheless, the rest of the film redeems itself. I went into this movie having no idea what it was about, and found myself being thoroughly surprised. All I knew was that Jessica Lange won an Academy for it, and I love Jessica Lange, so I watched it. This is probably my favorite work by Hoffman. He's perfect in everything he does in this movie. I had no idea Bill Murray was in it, and he was hilarious. Jessica Lange was really good, of course.. There's not really anything too bad to say about this movie. I would definitely recommend it!

The premise of this film really works and its bolstered by some great performances. Hoffman is outstanding, and Murray does a fantastic job in a rather underrated role. Nothing laugh out loud funny, but they do a good job of balancing the Comedy and Drama. The one complaint I have is that as good as a lot of the elements are it ends up being a tad dated. Most notably the score flat out sucks (and that's coming from someone who generally likes cheesy 80's music).

I'd been skipping this one for years -- who wants to see a guy in drag for two hours? But I was missing out on a classy satire filled with humor. Sure, if you start picking at it, it's easy to criticize, but if you go along with the basic concept of a guy learning more about himself and societal constructs, it's a great ride. (How "she" avoided using the wrong restroom, I guess I'll never know.)

Enjoyable film with a strong premise and good performances. Hoffman kills it as the unflappable dame-with-a-backbone Dorothy Michaels. The film's best scenes are its most unpredictable, when he is acting in the soap opera. The rest of the material, e.g. falling for a girl and rushing around trying to live a double life, are a bit more average. I don't think the film had as much heart as, say, Mrs Doubtfire. But it had a strong, simple message, and entertained well enough. Memorable, not classic.

Tootsie stands out as one of the most notably 80's vibed films of the decade. I can imagine that Tootsie was probably considered to be bold and tactful at the time, but sadly the formulae has been emulated many times since. And the array of rehashes that have followed sadly tarnish and outdate this film. Bill Murray is great in a supporting role and he was underused. But I absolutely adore the warmth & genius that is Dustin Hoffman here. And his monologue at the end is simply incredible acting.

With a than already and now even more unoriginal premise, I was pleasantly surprised about how funny, warm and relevant this comedy, that's both about acting and women empowerment, still was. Mediocre writing and a cliche story in which the ending seems entirely too easy and cleans up too well. Typical 80s comedy for the most part: Not funny, tired idea, bad plot. Bill Murray doesn't really fit into the story and seems to be shoehorned into it because he's Bill Murray. Nonetheless, he's possibly the only funny character.

This finds a nice place as the second best cross-dressing rom-com. Although there aren't that many laughs when Bill Murray isn't on screen, it has a lot of heart and the romance/drama is done better than most rom-coms and a million times better than you'd expect in a cross-dressing comedy.

I don't think I would've bothered with this film if it wasn't for Dustin Hoffman. And he was great. I've seen this sort of thing in Some Like It Hot (1959) and again in Mrs. Doubtfire (1993). So, the whole "it's funny because he's actually a man" thing was tired and didn't work for me. It's not a terrible film at all, just nothing special.

Wonderful, classic comedy which manages to pack so many throw-away gags into its marvellous, quite touching romance that multiple viewings are mandatory (Murray contributes best in this regard "was he that good a singer?"). Hoffman is aces as both Michael and Dorothy, and the cast is peppered with brilliant comic performances; Garr's insecure loon and Gaynes' soap opera hack two of the many standouts. Perceptive script and snappy direction helps make this one of the great comedies of all time.
