I wasn't expecting the evocative, rustic setting, unsettling electro score and the imaginative premise. I was expecting the shoehorned sleaze, bland acting, rubbery gore and bizarre fashions. What tips the scales in this film's favour is the realisation of the titular dead - nicely designed and atmospherically shot; their scenes feel imported from a better film. Also, the ending worked for me - one shot was particularly effective. Will need to see the rest of the series.

During the whole movie, the Templars only whisper two words, "Shire. Baggins."

I was surprised at how creepy the shots of the undead knights turned out, especially combined with the trippy soundscapes. The ruined monastery is an absolutely perfect location. Too bad it réally dragged in the middle.

Amando de Ossorio really started something fresh with his visions of skeletal Knights Templar zombies. The movie has so much creepy atmosphere, and always takes its time to build tension. Yes, sometimes it takes TOO much time, and the production values leave something to be desired. But that's to be expected with films like this. The image of the undead Knights riding on their horses in slow motion is one of the best images in horror history.

Not bad, it certainly has some scary moments, but the characters are all bland. The skeleton knights are cool, though.

The Templars and their monastery was creepy, the rest was a mess.

Rare case where the dubbed/edited English version is superior to the original. The lesbian sidebars and distinctly European sleaze distract from an unshakably cold and evil tone, which is helped along by some of the most hauntingly rotten corpses you've ever seen brought to life. I wish more movies ended the way this one does.

Well-staged and produced horror film is hobbled by some sleazy and repellent story elements par for the course for 70s European schlock, though the brazenly exploitative 'dorm room' flashback is at least kind of amusing! Possibly takes too long to get where its going at times, but the focus on eerie atmosphere at the expense of gore is to its credit, and the 'living dead' are genuinely unsettling creations. Brilliant, nihilistic finale.

Creepy images, cool zombie/mummies but all else is pretty boring. I'm glad I've finally watched this but most likely never will again.

DO NOT go to the Spanish countryside. It's empty for a reason.

Definitely inspired later 1970s horror cinema and despite being slow at times it won me over and is a pretty unique flick. The Blind Dead sure loved to ride in slow motion a lot.

Not even close to the worst thing the Catholic Church has done.

DVD Versátil Zumbis no Cinema Volume 1.

The undead templars were half a cool idea, but seriously this is a boring schlocky mess.

Original ideas, beautiful scenery and genuinely scary moments set this film above the rest.

"...an elegiac counter-vision that is much more fanciful than Night of the Living Dead..."

The first of four Spanish flicks shot by de Ossorio concerning the Knights Templar. The Templars make for a very unique screen monster and there is some eerie atmosphere, but far too much time is taken up by the usual assortment of uninteresting victims and sex scenes.
