Tokyo naito

The teen comedy stuff conflicts with the seriousness of the crime drama, making it neither funny nor suspenseful. Highlight is a scene in which he steals some cuff links from the opposing yakuzas dressed as a noh costume and mask. The use of colors during that raid is a foreboding of later Seijun.

This is an interesting film, with some elements of comedy (ah the attitudes of cocky youth!) and some fairly serious elements in the plot too. I particularly liked seeing the cultural dancing and the music played. It was intriguing seeing how characters cottoned on to what they thought was happening and how people reacted. Yes, if your a fan of asian cinema then I'd recommend this film. It does look a bit dated I suppose but then it does date from 1961, so fair enough.

This was a hodgepodge movie built around a generic or seemingly two generic stories. Seijun Suzuki does his thing and it doesn't help the film. Suzuki is pretty hit or miss with me and this was a miss.
